Marco Senior Softball: Sand Bar, CJ's on the Bay lead their divisions

With nearly half the season over, it remains a dogfight in the Island Division with all six teams being separated by only two games. Sand Bar holds a one-game lead over Mutual of Omaha Bank with the other four teams two games out of first. The Marco Division had CJ’s on the Bay take over sole position of first place with the team’s head-to-head win over now second place Rookies.

ISLAND DIVISION

Sand Bar, 24, Nacho Mama’s, 11

Sand Bar crushed Nacho’s whacking out 30 hits. Tom Angelo was the hammer with six hits, while Scott Byers, Wayne Bombaci, Ralph Sieja and Frank Benedetti had three each, Angelo and Byers had triples. Angelo racked up five RBI, Bombaci four, Dave Banghart and Frank Benedetti three each, while Byers, Sieja, and Dave Droddy had two each. Nacho’s Jeff Hultgren, Rich Small, Gary LaMotte and Jim Gilligan nailed three hits each. LaMotte, Gilligan and Jim Williams each drove in two runs.

DaVinci’s, 15, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 8

DaVinci’s Steve Hummel cashed in on the Bank with five hits, two being home runs and drove in five RBI. Jim Williams, who had three hits, pounded a triple, as did Larry Anspach and Dave Banghart for DaVinci’s. Anspach and Doug Patton each had two RBI. John DeRosa and Bill Shurina lined three hits each for the Bank, with Bill Thompson and Steve Clark driving in two runs each.

Brewery, 12, Sasso’s, 4

Jim Ramage blasted a home run and chased in four runs, while Tom Gazzillo drove in two. Nick Jacullo and Tom McCullough crushed triples to lead the Brewery over Sasso’s. John Gross laced three hits and Mike Edelman clocked a home run, giving both two RBI for Sasso’s.

Sasso’s, 11, DaVinci’s, 10

Rich Krumholz zapped four hits and Bob Levasseur three to pace Sasso’s. Krumholz and Grady Fuller had three RBI. John Gross. Craig Cunningham, Doug Patton and Paul Shelton each smacked triples for DaVinci’s. Tom Tankersley drove in three runs and Shelton two. The loss marked DaVinci’s third one-run loss of the season.

Sand Bar, 8, Brewery, 5

Sand Bar edged the Brewery and took command of first place in the Island Division. Mike Puskar rattled three hits, with Jim Williams driving in three runs and Wayne Bombaci two in the win. Jim Ramage sprayed three hits and Chuck Reich had two RBI for the Brewery.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 13, Nacho Mama’s, 3

Winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson stung the ball for five hits and drove in two runs as he held the power-hitting Nacho’s n-check, while also making a number of fine defensive plays. Teammates John Haskins, Ed Kingsbury and Steve Clark all drove in two runs for the Bank. Nacho Mama’s Rich Small had two RBI.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 18, Brewery, 2

Mutual of Omaha Bank caused the Brewery to tap out of the game due to the mercy rule after seven innings. Winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson pitched a masterful game, with the Brewery’s two runs being unearned. John Haskins and Bill Thompson unloaded on the Brewery for three hits each, with Haskins clobbering a three-run home run and Thompson a two-run shot. Haskins. Tom Whitlock, Herman Griffith and John DeRosa knocked in two runs each. Ed Back whacked two triples and Haskins one.

DaVinci’s, 22, Nacho Mama’s, 12

DaVinci’s continued to swing hot bats with Paul Shelton leading the way with four hits. Steve Hummel, Jim Williams, Tom Porter, Larry Anspach and Jim Gilligan had three hits each. Hummel and Bill Wright racked up four RBI and Shelton, Anspach, Porter, Gilligan and John Sherwin two each. Gary LaMotte drilled three hits and Ralph Leiterding had two RBI for Nacho Mama’s.

Sasso’s, 7, Sand Bar, 4

In the best defensive-played game of the season, Sasso’s bested the first-place Sand Bar team. Sand Bar jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but never scored after the third inning. Pitcher Bill Griffin was the winner for Sasso’s. Jimmy Cuevas lined three hits and John Gross and Jerry Cnudde drove in two runs each for Sasso’s.

Marco Division

Stonewalls, 11, Crazy Flamingo, 6

Winning pitcher Ed Kopecky peppered three hits and garnered two RBI for Stonewalls. Teammates Don Rooksberry, Paul Womack, and Chet Dal Bianco had two hits each, with Womack and Dal Bianco driving in two runs. Kopecky limited Crazy Flamingo to seven hits, with Bob Monaco having two.

CJ’s on the Bay, 8, Joey’s Pizza, 6

CJ’s rallied after Joey’s had opened up a 6-3 lead. Fran Diotte, Jim Yount, Warren Uhl, and Bill Dauch sprayed two hits apiece, with Uhl and Tony Brock having two RBI for CJ’s. Jim O’Meara and Jim Vitas nailed three hits each, and Bob Grant had two for Joey’s. Vitas drove home three runs.

Rookies, 22, Porky’s, 8

In an abbreviated game, Porky’s was roasted by the hot bats of Rookies Ray Niemeyer, Nick Brooks, Tom Bishard, and Pat Comerford who slammed four hits each. John Ranieri and Bill Moors had three each, while Jerry Lenhoff, Steve Roberts, Angelo Polizzi, and Larry Laird had two each. Bishard slammed two home runs and Comerford a triple. Bishard ended up with eight RBI, Brooks and Comerford five each, Larry Laird three and Ernie Famiglistti two. Larry Tuttle, Pat O’Connor and Joe Berry had two hits each for Porky’s, with Denny Lello chasing home two runs.

CJ’s on the Bay, 18, Rookies, 3

In a game determining first place in the Marco Division, CJ’s on the Bay came out swinging, invoking the mercy rule on Rookies after five innings. Jim Yount, Leon Schmitt, Bill Dauch and winning pitcher Dan Callahan all had two hits for CJ’s. Yount had three RBI and Mike Behr two. Ray Niemeyer, Jerry Lenhoff, and Tom Bishard lined two hits each for Rookies. Warren Uhl of CJ’s and Bishard of Rookies each slammed a triple.

Stonewalls, 15, Joey’s Pizza, 12

It was a come-from-behind win for Stonewalls after trailing 10-9. Fran Roche and Bob Smith stung the ball for three hits each, with Paul Womack and Dick Corley having two for Stonewalls. Womack ended the game with three RBI, Smith, Al Cenicola and Mike Gallagher each had two. Bob Grant and Bill Kaschube drilled three hits each. Jack Stevenson, Jim Vitas, and Denny Davis had two each for Joey’s. Vitas chased in five runs and Kaschube three.

Crazy Flamingo, 17, Porky’s, 12

Flamingo’s recorded the team’s second win of the season. Dom Fiorda laced three hits and Joe Furst, Ray Zielinski, Bob Monaco, Steve Slaggie, Roger Wise, and Steve Slaggie had two each. Rich Larkin and Keith Stought drove home three runs each, while Furst, Zielinski, Fiorda, and Fran Dooley chased in two each in the win. Porky’s Larry Tuttle and Butch Monson tagged three hits each. Dave Coward, Jim Battye, Jim White, Jim O’Connor, Jim Conway, and Denny Lello had two each, with Lello crunching a triple. Monson recorded four RBI and Tuttle and Joe Barry each had two.

ISLAND DIVISION STANDINGS

Sand Bar, 6-3, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 5-4, DaVinci’s, Nacho Mama’s, Sasso’s and Brewery, 4-5.

MARCO DIVISION STANDINGS

CJ’s on the Bay, 7-1, Rookies, 6-2, Stonewalls, 4-4, Joey’s Pizza, 3-5, Porky’s and Crazy Flamingo, 2-6.
