Letter to the Editor: On the ‘branding’ of Marco Island

Congratulations and best wishes for success to newly elected 2014 President Jacquie Koon of the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce. All Marco Islanders should proudly endorse and advertise her inaugural mantra delivered to her Chamber members – “Brand yourself or someone else will brand you!”

As a matter of fact, shouldn’t that emerge as our community’s New Year’s resolution and collective social-political-economic pursuit for all citizens be they Chamber members or not?

Marco Island has always been “branded” (i.e., labeled, stigmatized, identified) by strong forces of change beyond our citizenry’s collective desires, interests and intentions to maintain Marco Island as an exceptional residential community along Florida’s Platinum Gulf Coast. Such “else branding” has been the major intent of commercial realtors, planned unit developers, large-scale contractors, off-island financiers, investors of all sizes and pedigrees, major hotel hosts and conventioneers and a plethora of committed and/or delusional entrepreneurs. Each category of these “branders” seem dedicated to the redirection of Marco Island’s original founding as a classy residential Gulf Coast center to just another Sun State shopping-commercial-short visit-refueling-sun tanning center for national and international tourists and travelers.

Let’s all of us loyal, committed and dedicated Marco Islanders join our Chamber’s President Koon and keep “branding” ourselves as a truly established residential community exuding exceptionality daily while resisting those “someone else branders” committed to our ultimate destruction.

Maybe, if President Koon spent more time working on her food & wasted less with this branding blather, her luncheonette could earn some better brands from YELP....

BREAKING NEWS --- Our Marco Island Finance Director/CFO has a recent history of multiple fore-closures, bankruptcy, and small claims judgment against him.
All these immature and irresponsible acts were within a 2 year period, and occurred within 2 years of the time we hired him.
During those 2 years, this CPA was steadily employed with no gaps in employment history, so there are no excuses for failing to honor his financial contracts.
This does not inspire confidence in his financial management or his commitment to honor obligations.
So, I had to wonder who would hire someone with this history to oversee our city finances; to be in charge of over $300Million of our tax dollars; and why?
If he can’t manage his own finances, why would we trust him to manage ours?
So, I went to our City Manager, and to our City Council, and asked them, and requested that he be quietly removed from that position.
They refused to take those actions to safeguard our money.
So, I’m asking the citizens of Marco – would you hire someone like this as your CPA, or to represent you against auditors, or the IRS?
Would you give him access to your bank account?
I urge you to contact our City Manager and the City Council at council@marcocitycouncil.com or 239-389-5000, WHILE OUR MONEY IS STILL SAFE.
