Marco begins sorting 220 applications for Marco Island police chief

There is no rush to fill the position of Marco Island police chief and that may be a good thing as 220 applications have already been received for what city officials are calling the “first soft deadline” of Friday. The large stack of resumes collected over the last three weeks will be sorted into one of three categories: unqualified, qualified but not recommended, or qualified and recommended, said City Manager Steve Thompson. Authorities warn of scam using Marco bank's name

It’s not exactly times of easy money, perhaps that’s why people across the country are receiving fake checks and hoping they are real. Marco Community Bank is listed as the name of the bank on checks being sent out to thousands across the country who receive the bogus checks for being mysteriously chosen as a “secret shopper.” MCB received about 80 calls regarding the checks in the first day just over a week ago, said MCB branch manager Colette Heft. The Golden Gate Estates brush fire that forced evacuations on Thursday continued to burn this morning. The Golden Gate fire district continued to battle the blaze today, with fresh crews due on the fire line this morning. Golden Gate fire district spokesman Victor Hill noted that "significantly more" than 200 acres have burned and that the fire was 50-percent under control this morning. Full story »
