Bearing in mind caution, how do you deal with ‘hurricane hype?’

"I’ve had some TV experience, and know that NBC and ABC are different stations, but are under the same roof (of ownership). In times of storms, they broadcast using their main meteorologists, so I think that’s fairly informed information. Some stations tend to focus on certain sections of a town or city, and people (watching elsewhere) think it’s affecting the whole area. I think (meteorologist) Robert van Winkle is good."

"We have family up north, and they always think it’s much worse than it is. I think they hype hurricanes more up north than they do down here, and people think we’re a mess when we’re really not. I watch Channel 5 and listen to a weather band radio. I think the local stations are better than the national stations. They (local stations) keep people cautious."

"I always think about my kids first, unlike a few years ago when I didn’t act on the side of caution. I watch and monitor on the computer constantly, and usually look at a couple of sites. I look at the models and warnings, and if it’s coming we either go to Orlando or Georgia, where we’ve rented a cabin before. I don’t avoid any (television) stations, but look at a variety. I don’t put all my eggs in one basket."
