Jay Jones bows his head during the invocation at the Bonita Springs VFW Post 303 Veterans Day ceremony in Bonita Springs on Friday. More than 100 people turned out for the event, which serves as remembrance of veterans. Jones, the state commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, was a combat veteran wounded in the Vietnam War. The Purple Heart was the first U.S. military decoration, instituted by General George Washington in 1782 and awarded for bravery in action. The current purpose of the medal is as an award for those wounded or killed (awarded posthumously) in the service of their country.
