See larger Pennsylvania fruit farmer John Furen wanted to grow citrus in the winter. He first tried this from 1874 to 1876 near Sanford, Florida. In the winter of 1900, accompanied by daughter Margaret, and son Guy, John Furen came to Estero and bought their first 10 acres east of Sandy Lane and south of the river.
