Deirdre Grant, a marine mammal biologist from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, watches for a manatee calf to surface in a canal in Big Cypress National Preserve. A team of biologists and park officials unsuccessfully tried Friday to net and rescue the calf, which was trapped in the canal and suffering from severe cold stress. When caught, they plan for the animal to be rehabilitated at Lowry Park in Tampa.
