In 2003, Collier County commissioners turned over road easements in the Southern Golden Gate Estates (now the Picayune Strand State Forest) to the South Florida Water Management District to make way for Everglades restoration. As part of the deal, SFWMD agreed to give the county 640 acres of land for ATV use by 2005.
