Asian green mussels have been cited in the waters of the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Marco Island, Isles of Capri and Naples. Experts expect they arrived in their larval stage as plankton drifting through the waters current that eventually clinged to pilings, rocks and other submerged surfaces.
