Gopher tortoise
Our only native tortoise in the southeast part of the United States. Has been described by many who see these awesome creatures for the first time as being from the days of the dinosaurs. They can reach up to 15 inches in length and move at a very slow pace on large elephant-like legs. Fun fact: These tortoises are known for their incredible burrows, which can be as much as 35-feet deep. Many other animals depend on in these burrows for refuge.
