The race was marred by the death of 30-year-old Paul Dana, who died after a crash during a warmup session for the race. Dana, a teammate of Indy Racing League phenom Danica Patrick and Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice, was a former motorsports journalist who was a rookie driver.
