The Key Marco Homeowners' Association and the Marco Island Historical Society have teamed up to add two shell mounds and a shell ring to the list of National Historical Landmarks. Both groups hope that such a designation would enable them to maintain the plant growth around the sites, which is currently restricted by development restrictions placed on Key Marco because of the presence of unique native plant species.
