Alligators congregate at a shrinking Cochran Lake in the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. Typically loners, alligators are forced to gather in large numbers when water resources are scarce. Alligators have a reflective layers in the retina that allows them to see and hunt at night. The reflections shown here are from the camera flash. The red coloration is caused by light bouncing off the blood vessels of the eye.
