Jody Brown from the Southwest Florida Archaeological Society, combs through dirt on a sifter hoping to find artifacts from the Calusa Indian tribe Thursday as several volunteers showed up on Marco Island to help search through piles of dirt excavated from Vernon Place. Utility work on the street prompted the city to contact local archaeologists and ask if they wanted to check the soil before it was discarded. Dozens of cultural artifacts, such as shell hammers and pottery have been unearthed.
