While making my rounds of the burrowing owl sites that I maintain as one of Nancy Richie's volunteers, I saw a Mom & Dad sunbathing to chase away the night chill. As I approached, Mom dashed down into the burrow. Dad puffed up all 7.5 ounces and 8 inches of his fearless self, lifted his wings, stepped forward, and "scared" 6'3" me away (see photo). At this time of year, this protective sentry behavior usually means it wont be long before the little fuzzball chiclets (Nancy's term) begin appearing across the island. Another great reason to live on Marco!
