Kappy Kirk, right, niece of Tommie Barfield, signs a book being held by ESE (Exceptional Student Education) teacher Paula Lhota. The book, titled “When Peacocks Were Roasted and Mullet Was Fried, included a picture of Kirk. Kirk’s 8-year-old great-granddaughter, Katie Moss, center, watched the signing at Tommie Barfield Elementary School on Marco Island on Thursday, which was the school’s 50th anniversary. The day’s activities included an open house with re-enactments featuring historical characters including a school marm, a ferry boat captain, Barron Collier and Captain Collier. The day’s activities also included a school-wide program with songs and music led by music teacher Lisa Braren and student actors traveling to different years with a time machine on stage.
