Florida TaxWatch President Dominic Calabro brought out his giant stuffed turkey for the organization's annual post-legislative session news conference Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in Tallahassee, Fla. After examining the $72 billion state budget, the budget watchdog group urged Gov. Charlie Crist to veto 509 items totaling $274.7 million. These are "member projects," commonly known as budget "turkeys," that are slipped into the state spending plan by powerful members without going through the normal appropriations evaluation process.
