Firefighters work on the scene of the 1:32 a.m. crash on March 25, 2005, that occurred when Nicole Ann Velasco, then 17, was speeding up to 100 mph in 41-year-old German Garcia's red 1994 Ford Mustang. She lost control and slammed into a power pole at Everglades Boulevard and 18th Avenue Northeast. The car wrapped around the pole, the front bumper touching the rear seats and splitting the car in half. Garcia died, one teen lost part of his leg, Velasco's 16-year-old sister nearly died, and two others suffered minor injuries.
