Golden Apple recipient Jean Lorenz, right, a CO-STEP (Collier Skills Training for Employment Program) teacher at Naples High School, supervises her student, Jake Ross, left, senior, as he transitions from an internship to employment at Whole Foods supermarket in Naples on Thursday, March 25, 2010. Lorenz helps students with significant barriers for education acquire internships and jobs in Naples as they transition from high school to the work force. Ross has Fragile X Syndrome - a genetic disorder that is a common cause of intellectual disabilities. Lorenz is in the process of fading Ross from support to ensure that he can work independently. "I want to bring the sanctity back to vocational education," Lorenz says. "One's vocation is one's calling. I can't think of anything more important than to figure out what a child's calling is." Lorenz walks her students through a customized program that places students in jobs that best suits their interests and abilities. Photo by Tristan Spinski
