Maureen Bonness, a botanist and manager of the wildlife preserve at Willow Run Quarry in eastern Collier County, stands for a portrait on the edge of the preserve on Friday morning. Bonness's efforts to rid the preserve of invasive plants has created an ideal habitat for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, which are endangered and have taken up residence in artificial cavities set high in several of the pine trees. Two of the endangered woodpeckers now living at the quarry were relocated from Georgia to the Picayune Strand last year. Tristan Spinski/Staff
