A stretch of former roadway with raised berms has been cleared to recreate wetlands in Picayune Strand. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District are breaking ground on a new pump station to regulate the flow of water into the Picayune Strand. Work has been underway since 2006 to flatten abandoned roadways and plug canals to return the Picayune Strand to a wetland habitat. Photographed Feb. 17, 2011. Aaron Hale/Staff
