Vegetation begins to blossom on a stretch of land in the Picayune Strand that used to be a canal. The canal was filled, Everglades restoration project, so eventually there would be a sheet flow effect to recreate wetlands. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District are breaking ground on a new pump station to regulate the flow of water into the Picayune Strand. Work has been underway since 2006 to flatten abandoned roadways and plug canals to return the Picayune Strand to a wetland habitat. Photographed Feb. 17, 2011. Aaron Hale/Staff
