Firefighters were working Sunday to contain a brush fire burning an exotic, invasive tree, producing heavy smoke southeast of Physicians Regional-Collier Boulevard. As of 2:30 p.m., about 35 to 40 acres of melaleuca trees were consumed by fire south of Sabal Palm Road in Picayune Strand State Forest, said Victor Hill, a spokesman for the Florida Forest Service. One home was temporarily threatened by the fire but is no longer at risk, Hill said. The fire started at about 1:30 p.m., Hill said. No cause is known. Photo courtesy of NBC-2.com.
