Joyce Iamstrong looks to pass to an open teammate during practice Thursday, Jan. 3, 2012 at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla. Formerly known at Joyce Holloway, she started a new chapter in her life Aug. 15, 2011 now legally known as Joyce Iamstrong. The starting 5' 9" guard for the FGCU Eagles has become, according to Head Coach Karl Smesko, "The most improved player in the conference, if not more." Iamstrong went from averaging 6 minutes a game in 2011-12 to 30 minutes this season. She is a Chicago native and transferred from Jefferson College after her sophomore year. She helped her team to an Atlantic Sun Conference last year and a 12th in the nation mid-major ranking this season. Iamstrong says her increase in play is because of her strength and conditioning coaching in the offseason from Eric Krause as well as shooting technique. While she won't divulge publicly the entire reason behind the name change she did say it denotes a "fresh start" a "new beginning." "It's my life story in one word," Iamstrong said. "When they find out what I've been through, one day it will serve a purpose to inspire others," Iamstrong said. "Throughout any adversity you face, you can always overcome it."
