Greg Speers, presenter, embraces recipient Jerry Sanford after awarding Sanford the Fire Safety Award on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 during the 2013 Distinguished Public Service Awards at the Naples Hilton. Sanford spent 30 years in the New York City Fire Department, retiring as Press Secretary in 1997. He relocated to Naples in 2000 and was hired by the North Naples Fire District in the spring of 2000 to serve as the district's Public Information Officer. Sanford heads the task force for the Freedom Memorial monument project at the northeast corner of Goodlette-Frank Road and Golden Gate Parkway. The Distinguished Public Service Awards were developed by the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce and Naples Daily News in an effort to honor the men and women who sacrifice to protect our community, for outstanding professionalism and public service rendered by those in law enforcement, fire safety, emergency medical services, and support services.
