We didn’t require the winner to identify the dog by name. She (the dog) shies from publicity, apparently getting that trait from her reclusive owners.
  • Fire Rescue Chief Mike Murphy, who presented the firefighter of the year award, Marco Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Chris Byrne, who is the 2009 firefighter of the year and Jim Curran, president of the Marco Island Fire Rescue Foundation and organizer of Marco's 9/11 Remembrance Luncheon held at the Marriott Friday.
  • Work has started on the long-anticipated Marco Island Historical Museum, situated next to the library on Heathwood Drive. The $4.5 million project will feature a three-building complex surrounded by water, and designed to look like a Calusa Indian village. Historical society members are hoping for a fall of 2009 completion date.
