Lexey Swall/Staff Reenactor Mary Ann Lankford, of Hollywood, Fla., dressed as a farmer's wife in mourning during the reenactment of The Raid on Gopher Ridge. It was customary for Civil War widows to mourn for at least a year. Women of higher economic status were expected to mourn for two and a half years. The Raid on Gopher Ridge was the one and only battle fought in Collier County during the Civil War. Confederate soldiers held off the Union Army, that came down from Fort Myers, to protect the Florida cattle that were vital to the Confederacy.
