Research associate Brendan Scott collects water from reactors - a container that looks like a plastic bag - after trying to new way to sterilize the water at Algenol Biofuels in South Fort Myers. They will then test the water determine if the sterilization worked. A bill that passed in Legislature on Friday could affect Algenol, a company that is developing a way to make ethanol directly from algae. Part of the bill seeks to clarify that the Division of Plant Industry should be involved in regulating this industry and indicates that a permit might be necessary from this division. Meanwhile, the division of Plant Industry has already gotten involved with Algenol, requesting research results to show that growing the algae is safe and that in the event a disaster strikes, it won't contaminate the environment, costing taxpayers a lot of money.
