Eugene Leath of Fort Myers helps in the kitchen Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at American Legion Post 38 in Fort Myers, Fla. Leath has not been employed for 18 months. As part of his program with the American Legion, he has to perform various duties, one of which is community service. Local and federal agencies have partnered on a 100 day campaign to house homeless veterans. For example, Lee County's American Legion Post 38 is gathering donations to furnish apartments. Thirty-six homeless veterans have been housed as of May 23, according to Kim Hustad, program manager of family self-sufficiency for Lee County’s Department of Human Services.
