Vince Cautero, Sunrise Rotary’s district governor for District 6960 visited Sunrise Rotary members at their weekly breakfast meeting this week to offer plans and challenges for the coming year. Rotary year starts July 1, so he outlined plans and challenges for the coming year. Among them was more recognition for what Rotary does for the community and internationally. He also stressed more concentration on developing new and young membership. President Cautero emphasized that Rotary provides a unique opportunity for people to work together to accomplish good things for the community. Those interested in coming to one of the meetings to learn more about this club, should contact Roy Birkland at 642 9122.

  • As part of National Health day, Fire Rescue Chief Mike Murphy and a group of his fire rescue personnel visited a Sunrise Rotary meeting to participate in a wellness exercise. The rescue personnel gave EKGs and diabetes tests to all of the Rotarians during the meeting. At the same time, Chief Murphy stressed healthy habits and gave tips for a healthy lifestyle. Above is councilman Jerry Gibson preparing to have an EKG exam. Firefighter Paramedic Heath Nagel is taking the blood pressure. Firefighter Paramedic Nelson Ramirez is to his left and Firefighter Paramedic Robert Riegler is to his right. After the testing, a fire fighter retrieved the results from the ambulance parked outside. it was very good. All is well with Gibson and all of the Rotarians at the meeting that had tests taken that morning. This visit was also part of the Community Awareness 101 program organized by Sunrise Rotary in cooperation with City Manager Steve Thompson. Rotarians also received a small gift from the department and, all in all, it was a healthy start of the day for all involved.
  • While fishing with FWC Capt. Gregg Stastny, Sheri Leigh Chick, 12, from Essex, United Kingdom caught this beautiful, almost 29-inch, redfish using a live shrimp for bait. Sheri was accompanied by her family. This will be tough to beat next year.
  • Jackie Barbara, a soon to be grammar school teacher from Chicago, and her boyfriend, Chef Joe Loverde, from Chicago, visited Jackie's Aunt and Uncle, Philip and Claudia Bruni of Marco Island, this week end and had only a few words to say, 'We so could live here!' It's no wonder, after a boat ride around Marco, seeing manatees and dolphins up close to the boat, a swim in the ocean with her uncle, lunch at Stan's and a day full of our great sunshine! We hope to see them again soon on Marco.

  • The incoming president for Marco island Sunrise Rotary, Wanda Day, welcomes Vince Cautero, the new District Governor for Rotary’s District 6960 which includes Marco Island. The Rotary year started July 1. Sunrise Rotary also celebrates a first in that they have moved to Bistro Soleil Restaurant to hold all future meetings. Meetings are held at 7:30 a.m. every Tuesday.
  • Richard and Dorothy Braun, originally from Adrian, Michigan, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Aug. 13. The couple has four children: Cynthia, Keith (wife Sheryl), Carol (husband John) and Martin, deceased, (wife Stephanie), and six grandchildren. Richard is a past president of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. They were involved in funeral service for 50 years. After retiring to Marco Island in 1994, they became active in boating and Richard is a past commander for the Marco Island Power Squadron. Richard is one of the founding members and past president of the Marco Island Fire Rescue Foundation.
