  • Vince and Ellen Kiernan on their Island Helicopter tour. There are not a lot of secrets that are kept from grandfather, Vince Kiernan, but this was a special one for his 75th birthday ... After Mass at San Marco Church with a brunch at the Hilton, the festivities continued with sightseeing around Marco and Naples by helicopter.
  • Vince and Ellen are the proud parents of five children and 12 grandchildren, all in different areas of the country. The family gets together every year, however, the children decided to surprise dad this year for his birthday. Vince thought he was going to a dinner for two at the Marco Hilton and, as he walked into the private dining area, all five children had flown in to celebrate this special event. • “Barron Collier” waves at the old Collier County Courthouse during the Everglades City Independence Day Parade
on Sunday. Ed Miracco of the Marco Island Historical Society enjoyed playing our county’s founder as he
rode on a swamp buggy built and driven by Jim Bryan of Chokoloskee. The entry won a prize.
  • Beachgoers caught a rare, scarey glimpse of a water spout near Marco’s South Beach at about 12 p.m., Thursday. Observers say it lasted no more than a couple minutes and, besides blowing blankets, umbrellas and beach chairs around when it neared the sandy shore, the water spout caused no reported damage or injuries. View a video by resident Rick Bailey, photos submitted by observers and a story with comments about reported sightings on marconews.com.

  • Return to the wild - Several volunteers and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic team released a bobcat back into the wild near the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge June 26. This bobcat was admitted on New Years Day, the first arrival of 2009 to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. The bobcat kitten was found wandering on a side street with a littermate near Pine Ridge and Airport Roads in Naples. “This is what it is all about,” said Joanna Fitzgerald Vaught, Conservancy wildlife clinic director. “We’ve cared for the bobcat and now she gets to go back into the wild.”
