Artists Elba Martinez and Edwin Villasamil were welcomed at the Museum of the Everglades on Sept. 5. Their amazing environmental portrayals will be on display throughout the month of September. The Museum of the Everglades is located in Everglades City, just off the circle in the center of town. A showcase for the history of the Everglades region, the Museum presents the story of 2,000 years of human habitation with artifacts and period photographs. Education programs, lectures and events are presented throughout the year.

  • Longtime Marco Island resident Christine Spragens recently celebrated her 60th birthday with an elaborate dinner and drinks at Tavern On The Green, in New York’s Central Park.   • CITY FINANCE DIRECTOR GIVES ROTARY GOOD NEWS - Patricia Bliss, Marco Island's finance director, recently addressed Sunrise Rotarians to update them to financial conditions of our city. The first big news was that the dollars listed on the Tax notices, most of us just received in the mail, was overstated for Marco Island. We can expect less than indicated on the City of Marco Island line on that notice. She went on to say that this year's budget for Marco is $500,000 under the spending cap. Patricia told the interested audience that the current electric franchise fees have been eliminated so now the property tax is the only charge assessed by the city. Due to the current tight financial times, steps have been taken by the city to meet these challenges. The new budget has no salary increases and an increase in insurance has been passed on to the employees. Other moves include delaying $2,000,000 in capital projects and determining that future Capital projects will be bonded so the expense will be incurred over the entire life of the project. The city continues to have a AA bond rating which is considered excellent. All in all, a good report on the financial condition of our city as shown on a printed copy of the budget that was distributed to all who attended. Patricia was able to mingle with the citizen Rotarians prior to the meeting and made a very favorable impression among all. This was the 3rd session of the 'Community Awareness 101' program that was developed jointly by the City and Sunrise Rotary. The Sunrise Rotary holds weekly breakfast meetings that start at 7 a.m. at the Baptist Church for the month of September. Starting in October, meetings will move to the Bistro Soleil Restaurant.
