  • Jean Belknap sifts through dirt and shells Thursday in search of historical Indian artifacts at the Otter Mound preserve in the Estates area of Marco Island. The archeological dig coincided with the planting of 461 native tree and plant species at the 2-acre site following the recent removal of unwanted exotic species. Belknap, with the archeological laboratory at the Collier County Museum, unearthed the first small find of the day, a piece of Indian pottery about the size of half a marble.   • Janet Renner makes a donation after picking up some bake sale items at Regions Bank to raise funds for the Project Hope & Help Campaign. The campaign, initiated by the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce, is to ease the plight of local school children whose families are homeless. Looking on is bank Vice-President Christian Davis, co-organizer of the event along with Lenice DeLuca.

  • Greg West, left, of the Marco Eagles Football Board, provides a check for $2,500 to Pat Lane, president of the Lely Touchdown Club, while Lely football coach Steve Pricer and Jim Young of the Eagles Board look on. The funds came from the Jr. Trojan Football Clinic put on by the Lely staff for Marco youngters in early July.
  • Return to the wild - Several volunteers and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic team released a bobcat back into the wild near the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge June 26. This bobcat was admitted on New Years Day, the first arrival of 2009 to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. The bobcat kitten was found wandering on a side street with a littermate near Pine Ridge and Airport Roads in Naples. “This is what it is all about,” said Joanna Fitzgerald Vaught, Conservancy wildlife clinic director. “We’ve cared for the bobcat and now she gets to go back into the wild.”
