Jean Belknap sifts through dirt and shells Thursday in search of historical Indian artifacts at the Otter Mound preserve in the Estates area of Marco Island. The archeological dig coincided with the planting of 461 native tree and plant species at the 2-acre site following the recent removal of unwanted exotic species. Belknap, with the archeological laboratory at the Collier County Museum, unearthed the first small find of the day, a piece of Indian pottery about the size of half a marble. Read more online Friday, and also in the Aug. 5 print edition.
