On Friday, January 25th, 2013 at the Fort Myers Police Department’s Special Investigations Group with the assistance of uniformed officers conducted an undercover "John's Operation" on Cleveland Avenue. The operation was in response to citizen complaints of street prostitution. Female officers posed as street prostitutes in an attempt to be solicited by individuals looking to receive sexual acts for money.
The Jackson Laboratory project lives on in Collier County — for now. An effort by Collier County Commissioner Tom Henning with the backing of newly-elected Commissioner Georgia Hiller to halt all staff work on the contentious project didn’t garner the necessary third vote at Tuesday’s board meeting. Henning’s motion failed 2-3.
Marco Island’s community celebration of the Fourth of July is two stories, or one story in two chapters. First, there’s the daytime beach party, Uncle Sam’s Sand Jam at Residents’ Beach, put on by the Marco Island Civic Association, with help from Lola Dial of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Act two comes after dark, when the professional fireworks are fired off from a barge anchored offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, augmented by more than a few amateur pyrotechnic displays launched from the beach itself.
