Lely High School graduate Jesse Witten was a Cinderella story in the 2009 U.S. Open. Witten made it all the way through qualifying for the second time in four years, then didn't stop. He upset No. 29 Igor Andreev of Russia in straight sets, beat Maximo Gonzalez in the second round, and took No. 4 Novak Djokovic to four sets before falling on Saturday.

The Lely High School football team opened fall practice on Monday. Head coach Steve Pricer said the Trojans will be facing a "monster'' schedule for the upcoming season.

Old basketballs Travis Waters presented Saturday to recently retired Lely High boys basketball coach Don Stewart are coated in history. The balls, used in Stewart’s first season with the Trojans, represent the past and Waters’ mission to properly pay tribute to the coach he feels he let down 26 years ago.

At halftime, former Lely standout, Steve Octavien, was honored. He is the first Lely player ito make it in the pros, playigng defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys. His parents, Philmene and Estefan, accepted a plaque and football jersey in Steve's honor, who was unable to attend due to mini-camp practices with Dallas. Lely Principal Ken Fairbanks, left, shows the plaque to Kim Butts, former Lely strength coach, who is a long-time friend of Octavien, as his parents and Paul Ruby, Lely athletic director, look on. The jersey, plaque and other memorabilia will be placed in a showcase at the school to honor Ocatvien.
  • Culmer St. Jean, left, who led theway in Lely beating Naples in 2005, was on hand for the first Lely Touchdown Club Recognition Cookout. With him is Landy Padin, who coordinated the event, sponsored by Foxboro Sports Tavern.
  • Marco's Chris Fowler and David Ged took part in the first Lely Touchdown Club Alumni Recognition Cookout on Thursday. Fowler, played the offensive line, defensive end and tight end for the 1979 Trojans and Ged played defensive back on the 1981 team.
