  • Myra Gomez proudly holds up her catch with Bonita Bay resident Raphael Garcia.

More than 200 students and volunteers participated in Bonita Bay Fishing Club’s 15th annual Kids’ Pond Day on April 14. Special needs students from the Buckingham Exceptional Student Center and Fort Myers Special Olympics were joined by 35 Golden Gate Elementary Intermediate School students, who were being recognized for academic excellence, citizenship and service to the community. The students, accompanied by volunteers from the fishing club and the Kiwanis clubs of Naples and Golden Gate, used cane poles to catch and release bass and blue gill in a large pond at the Bonita Bay Club East golf courses. The morning of fishing was followed by a cookout; each student went home with a cap, trophy and photo with his or her catch. "This event is a reward for those students who work hard and cope with exceptional challenges," said fishing club President John Maliszewski. "It is a great way to share the joy of fishing with kids who seldom get such opportunities." Note the government flag flying over the square as the band performs. The wall is in the background, as is the Olympic message on the side of the mountain in the background. Also note that this is a U.S. band playing in a place that not too many years ago Americans, nor other foreigners, could even visit.

Both performances Sunday (the first was at the World Park in Beijing, which was televised nationally on state television later in the day) were just incredible from a human standpoint.
  • A crowd gathered as the Barron Collier High School marching band's drums were unloaded for a performance at the Great Wall on Sunday, April 1. The crowd was fascinated by the band members in uniforms and the instruments. After unpacking, the band's drumline members put on an impromptu performance. More than 100 people gathered to watch and many took photos and videos. People came running from shops up and down the street to listen as the drumline performed.
