More than 200 students and volunteers participated in Bonita Bay Fishing Club’s 15th annual Kids’ Pond Day on April 14. Special needs students from the Buckingham Exceptional Student Center and Fort Myers Special Olympics were joined by 35 Golden Gate Elementary Intermediate School students, who were being recognized for academic excellence, citizenship and service to the community. The students, accompanied by volunteers from the fishing club and the Kiwanis clubs of Naples and Golden Gate, used cane poles to catch and release bass and blue gill in a large pond at the Bonita Bay Club East golf courses. The morning of fishing was followed by a cookout; each student went home with a cap, trophy and photo with his or her catch. "This event is a reward for those students who work hard and cope with exceptional challenges," said fishing club President John Maliszewski. "It is a great way to share the joy of fishing with kids who seldom get such opportunities."
