South Dakota's mysterious Spirit Mound

In 1804 many area tribes feared Paha Wakan as a place of little devils. Lewis and Clark were determined to explore it – and it – on a hot August day. William Clark noted the view from the summit as “a most butifull landscape.” Today the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie is owned by the South Dakota Division of Parks and Recreation and open year round. There is no admission fee or access charge.
