About South Street City Oven and Grill

When people step into South Street City Oven and Grill owner Joe Unsinn hopes they’ll feel like they’ve been transported more than 1,000 miles to a Northeastern city’s neighborhood restaurant and gin joint. The environment at South Street, named for a famous street in Philly, is “a little artsy, a little eclectic and a bit rock ‘n’ roll,” Unsinn said. “If you’re going to open up a restaurant and succeed you can’t do what everybody else is doing, so we’re doing something a little more fun, a little more urban.” Brightly-colored art decorates the walls of the restaurant at the corner of Pine Ridge and Goodlette-Frank roads. One wall has an image of Billy Idol and toy barrel monkeys; another is decorated with an image of famous Northern skyscrapers popping out of a city manhole and a quartet of four canvases, each with one letter from the word “love.” The 4,500 square-foot space centers around a large, U-shaped bar made of 13 slabs of granite and tables and chairs to seat 165 people clustered in the spaces around the bar. Distressed bricks and decorated with graffiti cover two of the room’s four walls.
