</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2010/mar/18/fox-business-anchor-will-speak-naples-friday/?partner=RSS</link><description>Brian Sullivan, Fox Business Network anchor, will speak in Naples on Friday at the 2010 Munich Re America Executive Conference.
He’ll serve as keynote speaker for some 45 insurance company presidents, discussing his observations surrounding the current economic crisis. Last week, the Daily News asked Sullivan to answer some of our questions. Here are his responses:
.
Q: Have you been to Naples before? A few years ago with my parents and family on vacation. A wonderful area and great people.
Q: What will you talk about as the keynote speaker at the conference?
I am giving a presentation on the stock and bond market, investors’ biggest concerns at the moment and taking questions on what I am hearing regarding the economic outlook. The best thing about working at Fox Business is the incredible number of smart, successful men and women who come on the network and I get to pick their brains. It’s humbling.
Q: What have your experiences been in reporting the economic and financial crisis on TV over the past year?
The most incredible aspect is the sheer volume of news flow. From that fateful day in September 2008 when the credit markets imploded to current day there has been a near endless stream of new developments. We have lived through the biggest bankruptcy in American history – Lehman Brothers – bailouts, bank failures, arrests and intense legislative activity from Washington, D.C.
I’ll never forget the day Lehman went under. My editor said “go to D.C.” I said “when” and he said “now.” I had no clothes but the suit on my back. I rushed to Penn Station, hopped an Amtrak and spent five sleepless days covering the unfolding crisis. My wife shipped me an extra suit and a quick trip to a Filene’s Basement solved my other sartorial issues. I was scheduled to fly to Nebraska that weekend to watch my college - Virginia Tech - play football. Needless to say, I didn’t make the game .. but I knew that I was bringing financial history to Fox Business’ viewers. It’s history I hope we don’t have to repeat.
Q: What are your thoughts on the crisis? What do you see going forward? What have we learned?
What I “hope” we learned and what we likely learned are very different things. Simple history is pretty clear that we are often doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. Let’s not forget that Florida went through a huge housing and land bubble and subsequent crisis – in the 1920s! I’m quite certain people after that said “never again” .. and look what happened. For now though I wish I could say the worst is behind us but I’m just not convinced. There are still trillions in debt obligations to come due in commercial real estate, mortgages and corporate debt. Not to mention our federal debt. I think it’s going to be rough ride for a few years.
Q: Have you done much reporting on Naples or Fort Myers and the housing crisis here? What are your thoughts on what’s happened here and when might it get better? Unemployment remains high and jobs continue to be lost.
We’ve talked about the area on Fox Business extensively because – unfortunately – the area has been on the front lines of the housing story. You had some of the greatest home price appreciation and then subsequent drop in the country. So much of your area’s employment relies on real estate – whether it be construction, selling homes or many of the other industries in the housing halo – that a housing recovery is vital to Naples and Fort Myers’ overall improvement.
The good news is that there has been some stabilization of pricing in the region. The bad news is that stabilization doesn’t necessarily signal a rapid recovery. But I do believe the very worst for home prices is behind us, though that doesn’t mean prices will surge anytime soon. You can’t improve until the job market improves. And that’s reliant on housing. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle.
Q: How long have you been an anchor?
Nine years. I’ve been in financial journalism for 14 ... starting as a tape editor, then producer, reporter and then anchor. I was at the Nasdaq when it hit 5,000 (and then fell) and at the New York Stock Exchange when it first broke 10,000. And, of course, we are still near Dow 10,000, 11 years later, sadly. I’ve lived through the tech stock bubble and housing bubble. Now we may be living through a debt bubble. Only time will tell but it’s my suspicion we are and, again, will have a tough few years ahead of us.
Q: What is your role on Fox Business? Have you always had an interest in business news?
I anchor the 11 a.m. – noon and 1-2 p.m. hours on Fox Business with my awesome co-host Dagen McDowell. I also write extensively on our Web site, appear on Fox News often and travel covering stories. In the last 12 months I’ve reported from London, Cairo and Dubai. Fox Business is a global business network and has shown its dedication to covering the biggest business stories, wherever they may be. In this global economy, they are often outside America and we are there.
Q: Any other thoughts you want to add about Naples or your visit?
I’m looking forward to coming back to the area and hoping to see some first-hand signs that a recovery may be underway. We all want to see good news.
