</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2012/feb/08/review-marco-island-players-herbert-other-stranger/?partner=RSS</link><description>The Island Players dug out the tie-dye tees, peace signs and lava lamps this weekend. The group serves up five one-act plays about life, love, family and the horizontal bop. While the writing leaves much to be desired, the acting lifts gentle, innocuous scenes to pleasant, enjoyable watching.

</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2012/feb/06/preview-easel-does-it-wet-paint-live-has-art-happe/?partner=RSS</link><description>Artists are traditionally a hard-living bunch, and this Thursday, over a score of them are planning to paint the town. Actually, it’s about doing good, not debauchery, as “Wet Paint Live” returns to the island for the fifth year.
A group of well-known Marco and Southwest Florida artists will fan out to locations all over the island with their easels, each creating a painting from start to finish on that day. The resulting works will be auctioned off that evening, many with the paint still wet – hence the name – in a charity fundraiser.

Unlike most art exhibits, the “Art in Bloom” show was mounted for only three days. A reception was held Friday evening at the Marco Island Center for the Arts, and then art lovers or flower fanciers had the weekend to take it in.
The brief time-frame mirrors the amount of time a flower can be counted on to show itself off to best advantage, after being cut. In a case of art imitating art, the Art in Bloom show consisted of 26 pieces by members of the Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island, each interpreting in horticulture one of the “fiber art” pieces displayed in the Art Center’s main gallery.

There's much to love - a towering Valjean, a thundering Javer, phantasmic effects and glorious voices. Yet, for all the soaring crescendo of sound, the production feels curiously inconsistent at times.

“The Preserve; Uniting Nature and Culture” art exhibit, open now at the Big Cypress National Preserve, is a provocative and scintillating collection of fine art creations by fifteen artists who, like Mitchell and Ludwig, have braved this diverse (both sultry and arid, breathtaking and sometimes dangerous) back country preserve situated against the Everglades and divided by Highway 41 between Naples and Miami. These creators are the Artists in Residence (AIR), who came and captured through their work this assorted wild land known for fire and water.

The Beatles, the Bangles, and Busta Rhymes, all will become the province of those whose memories are provided with a soundtrack by the tunes they loved.
For the crowd filling the covered court at Mackle Park on Sunday afternoon, there was no doubt what music filled the bill for them. Big band music, heavy on the brass, hits from around the time of WWII – the big one – was the draw, as the Music of Marco Big Band brought their 16-piece ensemble back to a familiar venue and an appreciative crowd.

The monthly gathering, held through the season at the Esplanade on Collier Boulevard, benefited from a “Goldilocks” day – not too hot, not too cold, just right.
“This is perfect,” said watercolorist Eloise Barrows, showing her works to Mary Dumais. “It’s not warm enough for people to come to the beach, but it’s very comfortable walking around.” Barrows said she had done eight paintings last week, preparing for the show, and putting a strain on her husband, who gets the job of framing them.

Sara Morsey brings the author to vivid, tenacious life as she battles through the year after her husband's death.

Courtroom dramas litter our TV screens - but this one crackles with intensity, personality conflicts and bitter disagreements. The verdict? A solid hit.

You could say that a show that features a dozen people sitting around a table arguing is not the stuff hits are made of. You might even say you could see the same thing when your family gathers for the holidays. But with a combination of a compelling story, spot-on casting, and bravaura acting by local thespians, “Twelve Angry Jurors” is a riveting drama.

This year’s Arts Afire will be a scaled-back, one-day event, taking place March 18, rather than the nine-day extravaganza held last year.

The occasion: "Moonlight &amp;amp; Magnolias," a slapstick retelling of how movie producers banged out a script for "Gone With the Wind." It's a rough journey - but an interesting one.

Now, a new exhibit opening today (Tuesday) at the Marco Island Center for the Arts demonstrates that fiber can also be employed in the service of fine art – and not just to hang a mobile.
