In the Jewish tradition it represents God’s bounty and food that sustains us. However, its meaning in the Christian churches is deeper and more profound. The Church Lady visited Marco’s houses of worship to explore the Bread of Life, the food that sustains and strengthens us.

Or a born-again Christian who never has stepped out of the church where you were saved? Perhaps the only time you go to a house of worship is for a wedding or funeral? Are you curious about the house of worship down the street? The Marco Island Clergy Association (CA) has developed an educational program to help answer those question, which is a time to learn about the different flavors of faith.

For many who grew up in secular homes, Christmas songs are endless choruses of “Jingle Bells.”
Christmas music often begins in the form of Muzak in stores before Thanksgiving. The Muzak, however, leaves out the beautiful words, the words of hope and encouragement. Even when the words are included we frequently fail to reflect on its true meaning.
The Church Lady leapfrogged from church to church gathering favorite songs and its meaning. Each response warmed the Church Lady’s heart and they will warm yours as well.

Emcee Kim Adamson, director of religious education, began the festivities by asking the children which season it was. One answered December; another got it right when she answered Advent. With the hall decorated in purple and an Advent wreath lit, Fr. Tim Navin read the gospel of Mark: “As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: ’Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: ’Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths…’”

</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/dec/02/church-lady-jcmi-hosts-first-interfaith-thanksgivi/?partner=RSS</link><description>What is more fitting than to begin Thanksgiving Day at an interfaith service at the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island?
Our pilgrim forefathers knew the Bible and their celebration of Thanksgiving had its roots in the Old Testament festival of Sukkot. (Sukkot literally means booths and refers to the temporary structures the Jewish people lived in while wondering in the desert.)
It is a joyous occasion; a time to give thanks and praise God for His many blessings. Sukkot is also referred to the festival of the ingathering of the fruit in autumn. It is celebrated in early autumn — September or October.

Welcome to the Potluck Dinner and Hymn Sing at Wesley United Methodist Church, held last Friday. “For Methodists music is essential,” said the Rev. Kirk Dreiser, the church’s pastor, as he chatted with the Church Lady just before the dinner.

Yes, it’s bingo, at the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island (JCMI) on Winterberry Drive, back for the 12th year in a row.
Doors open at 5:30 each Monday evening, and the first bingo card isn’t called until 7 p.m., so there’s plenty of time for schmoozing, as well as eating a little. The price of admission and cards includes a supper featuring kosher hot dogs, plus chips, coffee and desserts.

A special glow on their faces. A new strength in their stride. No, they didn’t just receive the latest treatment at one of Marco’s many spas. They most likely attended the Simulcast of the Extraordinary Women Conference on Saturday at the Family Church—Marco campus.

</title><link>http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/sep/29/praying-abundance-annual-blessing-stone-crab-fleet/?partner=RSS</link><description>As stone crab season approaches, Blake Weeks spends most of the day scrapping and cleaning out the barnacled traps leftover from last year. He and the rest of his crab catching crew will go through over 20,000 traps, pulling out old buoys branded with their boat’s insignia and discarding remnants of pigs feet used to bait the crustacean. Once the traps are ready, the new buoys marked and the boats tested, all that’s left is a hope and a prayer that this year will bring an abundant catch.
