Well, we didn't have a white Christmas, but the cold front that blew through this past weekend sure felt like snow was a possibility. The chill also seriously changed the inshore fishing as water temperatures also plummeted.

A consistent easterly wind of 15 to 20 mph has been blowing for the past five days or so, and it has made for some skinny water in the bays for morning anglers.

Windy weather over Thanksgiving made for some rough rides offshore, and some stirred up water inshore. As of Monday we were seeing water temperatures in the low 60s, which really slowed down the early morning snook and redfish bite.

Well, besides turkey on this Thursday, we will be having another light cold front moving into area waters. Winds will be out of the north or northwest until Sunday night, when they are scheduled to turn northeast.

On Tuesday, the winds finally died down somewhat, and that made for easier fishing both inshore and off.

Some great news for all the grouper fishermen -- and ladies, too. Thanks to the major effort made by Tom Marvel, the Gulf Council has made a significant change that will benefit anglers.

Red tide has been causing some very localized problems for area fishermen, but hopefully the big wind we are having this week will help to greatly dissipate it. And it has been spotty indeed.

Fishing has been reasonably good the past week, even though we had some pesky strong winds over the weekend. The wind stirred up the water in many areas, but by Tuesday the water quality had improved in many places.

Tuesday at 11:30, I got a call from a friend fishing within 300 yards of the beach. He was not real calm on the phone because his boat was surrounded by rolling tarpon.

We are definitely in the transition to fall fishing in Southwest Florida as water temperatures get a little cooler, and fish are moving around to look for something to eat. And eat they will!

Finally, some relief from the summer temperatures. Today was almost fall-like, and that helps to lower the water temperatures and to turn on the fish. Incoming tides in the morning are making for better conditions than last week.
