Biography
Due to an overall lack of talent, Ryan never achieved his lifelong goal of playing second base for the Minnesota Twins.
Some would say that Ryan displays that same overall lack of talent in his current job as the cops and crime reporter for the Naples Daily News, where he was hired, for reasons that remain unclear, in May 2006. If there is a significant crime story in Naples or Collier County, there is a good chance you’ll find Ryan at the scene badgering bystanders, and bugging the cops.
If for some reason you wanted to introduce yourself, he’s probably the guy wearing the shirt and tie with a satchel over his shoulder. Ryan thinks the satchel makes him look like Indiana Jones, but the difference, of course, is that Indiana Jones looked cool.
Ryan graduated magna cum laude with an undergraduate degree in marketing communications and art from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, which is well-known as the Harvard of the Wisconsin state schools (at least in River Falls it is). UWRF is also known as Moo-U, because of its agricultural programs and dating prospects.
After a few years of cubicle life while working in marketing for a large electronics retailer, Ryan chose to pursue a career in the lucrative field of journalism. After a year selling ads for a weekly newspaper in a Twin Cities’ suburb, Ryan headed south for the University of Miami, where he earned a graduate degree in journalism.
In addition to the Naples Daily News, over his six-year journalism career Ryan has written for the Miami Herald, the Panama City News Herald and the Birmingham News.
When he’s not working, Ryan enjoys sampling micro-brews, reading books on history and politics, playing softball, going to the beach, watching the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays on television, and doing other things that exceedingly untalented people do.
And so as not to get himself in any trouble, Ryan also likes spending time with his lovely fiancee, Megan.
If you know of a good cops, crime or public safety story, Ryan would appreciate it if you’d send him an e-mail at ramills@naplesnews.com or call him at (239) 263-4784. It beats having to dig up stories on his own.
