Growing up on a Christmas tree farm in rural Oregon, 13 miles from a town with a population just over 800, life as a member of the media was the last thing on my mind. After moving at age 10 to the big city (Cottage Grove, Ore. population 8,000) I discovered cable TV and more importantly 24-hour news and sports. During my teenage years I became more and more fond to the idea of being a sports reporter, and turned in my ball and cleats for a microphone and a computer. I worked in local radio and then for the local newspaper before leaving Oregon one year after my high school graduation. After a brief stop in North Carolina I moved to Orlando to attend the University of Central Florida. I graduated in May of 2008 with a degree in Journalism and worked as a freelance sports writer until joining the Daily News in April 2009.
During my time as a freelancer I worked for publications all over the U.S., covering everything from little league to major college football, the NFL and the NBA. Papers, magazines and Web sites that have published my work include USA Today, the Orlando Sentinel, the Dallas Morning News, San Jose Mercury-News, Beckett Baseball, Yahoo.com, ESPN.com among many others.
I'm thrilled to be living and working in Southwest Florida but I'm still new to the area so if you have any story ideas, tips on good places to eat or any other feedback, please feel free to email me at wmwommack@naplesnews.com
