Southwest Airlines is set to launch new nonstop service from Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport to Houston Hobby Airport on Thursday. 

Southwest will compete with United on the Milwaukee to Houston route. United already flies nonstop from Milwaukee to Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. 

Southwest is the dominant carrier in Milwaukee with nearly 45% of the passenger market share at the airport. 

United is No. 3 in market share at the airport with about 10% of the passenger traffic in Milwaukee.

Delta is No. 2 in Milwaukee with about 20% of the passenger traffic in the market.

Houston is the nation's fourth-largest city measured by population, with 2.3 million people. The population of the Houston metro area is about 6.8 million. 

According to the Greater Houston Partnership, an economic development organization:

  • The Houston metro area is home to 20 Fortune 500 headquarters,
  • The Houston Airport System handled 54.1 million passengers in 2017, a slight dip from the year before.
  • Hurricane Harvey forced airlines to cancel a significant number of flights in August and September, resulting in nearly 1 million fewer passengers passing through the city’s airports in those two months.
