With an 0-5 start to his first season as Lely High School football team's head coach, Fritz Jacques asked for four quarters out of his team on Friday night. He got that and then some.

The Trojans took 5A-12 district foe Mariner to overtime on Homecoming to pull out their first win of the season by just one point, 28-27.

"I'm proud of them," Jacques said. "So proud of them."

With the game tied at 21, the teams each were given possession on the 10-yard line. Mariner took the first attempt, crossing the goal line with a short run from quarterback Hunter Rees, but missed the extra point. The Trojans followed with a short run from Deshaun Duverge on their possession to tie the game.

All the Trojans needed to do was make the extra point.

Lely kicker John Liberal's attempt put it between the goalposts and the Trojans had their first win.

"We found a way to finish," Jacques said. "We competed for all four quarters. We had a little hump there, but we fought through it. They're starting to believe in themselves."

The Trojans jumped back in the game with a momentum-igniting, 60-yard pass to Chevy Octa from Jonis Dieudonne in the fourth quarter. Lely then forced a fumble just two downs into the Tritons series, and Duverge kept the Trojans rolling. He had a 32-yard carry, and followed it up with a game-tying, 5-yard run to tie the game with five minutes left.

"It's contagious," Jacques said. "We had a sophomore throw it to another sophomore and they made a big play. We rallied behind that."

The Trojans couldn’t get much done in their first series of the second half and were forced to punt on their own 9. After their first punt attempt was called back by a penalty, the Tritons’ line blocked their second attempt with the ball bouncing into Lely’s end zone. The Tritons made the recovery to take a 14-7 lead.

Rees followed with a 39-yard pass to Elijah Butz to push the Tritons’ lead to 14 points.

In the first half, the Trojans battered Rees, picking off one of his passes and sacking him three times. Lely struggled to stay ahead of the chains, succumbing to five penalties, including three personal foul calls.

With just 15 seconds left in the half, Rees finished a long drive for the Tritons with a 3-yard run to tie up the game.

Luc Thelice got things started for the Trojans with a first half interception to put Lely on the Mariner 35. Jean Joseph followed up with a touchdown on s 31-yard pass from Dieudonne with just four seconds left in the first quarter.
