Written on City signs $39,550 contact for cul-de-sac median improvements and maintenance on Marco Island:

in response to ajm3s:

Interesting! Let me add that last year, the committee with support from the city, stated quite clearly, that the "over grown" vegetation in cul-de-sacs posed a safety hazard because of lack of visibility.

http://www.marconews.com/news/2011/fe...

Now given your comments, and Mr. Pinter's need to apportion limited personnel and funding, which areas would you think the city's resources should be directed?

This is why we have a problem on Marco Island. The city and the beautification committee have lost their way...

Is Beautification now influencing city ROW standards to such an extent that safety is actually being compromised in some areas, while bemoaning safety issues in cul-de-sacs? Or is this just a ruse for replanting?

Let's see: What is more of a safety issue, if safety is our true guiding principle?

1. traffic areas traveled by tourists who may not be that familiar with turning locations, as well as citizens alike

or

2. traffic areas in cul-de-sacs?

To your point, of urging "immediate action on the part of the city", I would add, the city focus on priorities and stop confusing the public and informing or is it "misinforming" the folks with claim of safety issues in cul-de-sacs, when in fact, the city currency has designed/approved/installed unsafe areas on Collier. And please, I know the city will cry out that the city followed strict government standards and oversight in its execution.

Perhaps, the amended ROW standards, currently being formulated need scrutiny because elimination of shell in ROW is not a priority that meets the threshold of items to be banned on this island.

Line of sight is a concern! But I guess it is less a concern on Collier and more so in cul-de-sacs per Beautification.

Time for the city to turnaround and stop creating ordinances and standards that address beauty rather than safety. Especially, beautification under the guise of safety concerns.

Only on Marco Island, has the term "safety" been misappropriated so many times. And beauty codified to the point it may harm us.

Thank you for your understanding about this issue, and we can only hope the City acts before it is too late for someone.

Also, I discussed this issue with a member of our Police Department, and he agrees with me.

Written on City signs $39,550 contact for cul-de-sac median improvements and maintenance on Marco Island:

The Beautification Committee and Tim Pinter need to drive up and down Collier Blvd. and take note of the dangerous areas where the landscaping is too high and dense to make turns, or to see pedestrians crossing in the daylight and especially at night.
For example, I recently had a near miss with two people crossing Collier Blvd. at 7:30 pm while rounding the northbound bend, next to another car, just before the South Beach Sign. I could not see them, and I’m sure they could not see my head lights because of the high hedge, and the sign. This was a life or death situation with mere inches to spare.
I also challenge the Committee to try to turn from the left hand northbound lane of Collier Blvd. onto the Marriott’s ramp. It is impossible to see anyone in the southbound lane of Collier Blvd. until your car’s frontend is well into the lane. The pedestrian crosswalks are also so overgrown, you cannot see anyone crossing.
I also have an issue with the “bull noses” that should have just grass at that point, or vegetation no higher than 18 inches.
It’s just a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, and I urge immediate action on the part of the City.

Rick Santorum will get my vote in the Primary because I think he represents the type of American Family Man that helped found this Nation, along with my Ancestors, that were here before the Revolution.
I most likely will not get the chance to vote for him in the General Election because the “Party” does not think telling just the Truth will enable him to defeat Obama.
The “Party” would rather to let “Ramme” and the “Gink” continue to debate and make fools of each other, and wait to see which one will end up the “Master Debater”.
Also, after a lifelong member of the Republican Party, I will be changing to an Independent.

It would be great to have a tax deduction for private school tuition. Unfortunately, this will likely never happen.

The theory is that encouraging people - through tax deductions - to send their kids to private school will undermine the public school systems. The same argument goes to vouchers. The largest cost associated with local governments is the cost of public schools. If the government encouraged people to send their kids to private schools by giving them deductions or vouchers, fewer would go to public schools.

I am in favor or school competition so I support vouchers and deductions and charter schools, etc. Good schools will grow and poor schools will close.

But, since it is a basic government function to provide schools for all children, it is important that public schools are supported so that they can be the best possible - since we are paying for them anyway.

Also, the quality of the PUBLIC schools is directly related to the price of housing. Good schools = strong housing values.

Thank you for your understanding. I attended Public in the mid 40's to the mid 50's, and am ammazed how many of my classmates became extremely successful due to the quality of the system in those days.

I have no clue what happened to the system since then, but I expect Unions played a big role in the downfall. As you say, just look at housing values today.

Socialism is a political philosophy which aims to create a solidarity-based society where the basic values of freedom and equality are realized.

This would happen but known you. These are the core values and ideals of the American Revolution.

I am an American fan. Of course not a friend of the uncontrolled capitalism represented by George W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, Mr. Romney or the Tea-party. By the way. I guess you never traveled outside America. Economical America is the strongest regulated state with the most powerful unions. I never heard that Gingrich and Romney will fight the union like Thatcher or great President Reagan did it.

But tell me what that all has to do with Auschwitz!

"But tell me what that all has to do with Auschwitz!"

As I Said: "He who fails to study history is doomed to repeat it".

I was shocked to learn this about the schools in Germany, and how they are following the failure of our Public Schools in teaching History.

Our Sons work hard and pay a small fortune to send our Grandchildren to Private Schools, which is the same thing we did for them.

I'm waiting for a Politico to endorse the idea of allowing a tax deduction for Private School tuition.

You can't be serious if you think these "Old Foxes" are irreplaceable.

This is not the American System, it is the American "Good Old Boy" System, that keeps underlings from promotion, and new people from being hired.

"Someone can make sure I have no interest in the properties I am appraising — that I am not benefiting from the job I am holding," he said. "But it's a pain in the butt."
“Honest Abe” Skinner is a good example of what is wrong with the system that allows him to “Retire” on his first pension, and 30 days later, be rehired at his old salary, and start a new pension. My guess is, he is pulling over $300K per year from the “System”.
There are thousands of Florida Public Servant’s doing this, as well as others who retire from elsewhere, and continue to milk “We the People”.
This happened in NYC a few years ago, and the City was forced to pay over one thousand union employees, police, fireman, etc., a five hundred thousand dollar settlement each.
This needs to be stopped so people who need employment can be hired, instead of the people who are now millionaires, thanks to the “System”.

Does anyone, other than me, find this a little disturbing in light of the economic situation in this Country???

The percentage of my total County tax bill for the City is sixteen percent (16%). For what??, so people can run around inspecting signs?? Can't our huge police force be cross trained to do this?? Wake up Folks.

Written on Marco Island Planning Board weighs regulations for temporary real estate signs:

If they are aware of it, or not, Mr. Milk and Mrs. Carr are allowing themselves to become the Hammers used against competing business people who are trying their best to make a living, so they can pay the taxes necessary to pay their City salaries.
This is an Island that is being visited daily by potential customers looking for real estate, a good place to eat, shop, etc. Signs make it easier for these folks to navigate without slowing down and causing accidents.
Apparently there are business owners on Marco Island who believe their power over City Officials, and employees, give them the right to call in a temporary sign complaint at any hour of the day or night, and expect an immediate response, while they have identical signs on and around their properties.
Please be advised, this type of action, and a lack of a set of clear guidelines, only serves to confuse the issue, and raise suspicions about the integrity of the Enforcing Authority.

How could something as simple as the pipes not being covered before being encased in concrete be, by doing the necessary daily inspections, at every phase of the job??
I have been watching a simple sidewalk replacement job at the South end of Marco over the last few months. The reinforcement in the old slabs was useless at the bottom of the slabs, and the new slabs do not contain any reinforcement, nor were they placed over compacted fill. Almost one third of the new concrete was torn up and replaced due to cracking, and a large portion is now covered with red and blue painted arrows, which I assume mean, that section, will be torn up.

Maybe this part of Obama's Office Of Diversity, Inclusion?

http://www.judicialwatch.org/blog/201...

The new Office of Diversity and Inclusion will ensure that the entire U.S. government develops comprehensive strategies to drive and integrate diversity and inclusion practices. It will assist the different agencies in building a workforce that “respects individual and organizational cultures” by examining policy options, data trends and employee survey findings.

The goal is to eliminate demographic group imbalances in targeted occupations and improve workforce diversity. To attain this, special initiatives have been created targeting specific groups, including Hispanics, African Americans, American Indians, women and gays and lesbians.

...

And the Reality of where we are at...

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/arti...

According to The Washington Post, blacks hold 44 percent of the jobs at Fannie Mae and 50 percent of the jobs at Freddie Mac.

The EEOC, where African-Americans are overrepresented by 300 percent, has been asked to oversee the new "government-wide initiative to promote diversity and inclusion in the federal workforce."

Thank you very much for your informative response to this article on diversity in the work place.
I thought I would add to it by mentioning the Office of Diversity and Inclusion was formed by Obama, by Executive Order, which means “We the People” had absolutely no say in this matter.
Everyone needs to read your response closely and go to the links to see a true picture of where our once great Country is heading at the expense of the Tax Paying People.
It also helps explain why business is not hiring, because under the Diversity Rule, they must hire twice as many people to get the same amount of work done.
As far as our City is concerned, the answer is simple. Reduce staff to ninety-nine (99), and make the remaining staff work twice as hard.

You are right about the press looking into this accident. This is Marco Island where the speed limit is 30-35. I can think of a couple of questions to ask. How fast was the officer going, was he responding to an emergency, how many on-duty accidents has he had. This, like you said, is not a small fender bender. This is a test for the new chief. I just hope they are both OK.

This is my guess about what happened because I was there about 15 minutes after the accident, and looked at the skid marks this morning.
The Lady most likely lives in a Condo on the West side of Collier Blvd., and was coming out of Saturn Ct. and making a left onto Collier.
The police car may have been difficult to see because of her age, and the level of growth in the center isles, which needs to be addressed in many areas of Collier Blvd, plus it appears the policeman was driving over the speed limit without his warning lights on. His speed was clearly evident by the length of his skid marks, and the damage to both cars.

This whole false arrest and set-up was started by Bob Natale owner of NeNe's Kitchen a jeolous competitor who had complete knowledge of Bentley being held by Joe for collateral for bad checks of $56.000 that was given to Joe for rent on a house he owned on Marco Island not for a gambling debt which people accused Joe of. People should know the facts before they throw around wrong accusations!! Collier County States Attorney confirmed the Bentley and bad checks were a civil matter and Joe had the right to hold the Bentley for collateral. The owner of the Bentley filed a false stolen car report in Chicago when all along he had left the car with Joe for collateral. In the insurance investigation the insurance company found out where the car was and why and talked to Det. Zirgebal and confirmed Joe had the car. Bob Natale had knowledge of all of this. Bob Natale saw Joe driving Bentlely and called his friend on his personal cell phone, Officer Hector Diaz and and told him Joe was driving the Bentley and to arrest him for stolen car. They had knowledge that the car was never pulled from the stolen car hot sheet in Chicago. Officer Diaz along with Sgt Thompson and Capt Baer decided to go after Joe because maybe they wanted a little excitement in their life. They should remember who pays their salaries it's people like Joe Oliverio who is a prominent business owner and resident of Marco Island. The police department should be looking for real criminals not people they try to make look like one. Bob Natale knows about criminals, checkout his background. Bob Natale should worry about his own business before it fails like when his house on Barfield Rd was repossessed and how he busted out of the Mercantile Exchange in Chicago owing people money and ran to Marco Island. As I told you months ago you should check out all the facts and reports Joe filled with Marco Island Police about the Bentley the in January 2010,if Joe stold a car I am sure he would not tell the Marco Island Police he had the car.

As far as Hubby goes I can only say, “WELL I’LL BE A SON OF A FLOCK FLEECER MAN” !!!!

Written on Investors sue Jack Antaramian over Naples Bay Resort, two other projects:

Back in the early 1980’s, I questioned the exchange made with Antaramian by our Commissioners for double density at Cape Marco for the property now used for beach parking.

I called a Commissioner and asked why they were dealing with him, instead of the rightful owner, because he only had an option to buy the property.

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening.

Also, I can see why the investors are upset when they realized 30K+ of their money was spent to support Obama.

Maybe the BIG “O” will bail Jack out.

Written on Marcophiles: Answer to Marco city financial strains — naming rights:

When it was suggested that the utilities operation be out sourced to a private company, the response was: "They would expect to make a profit".

Imangine a private company wanting to make a profit??? Where is their sense of Public Service???

Written on Proposal to raise several Marco Island fees angers some in business community:

When will our City Councilors begin to come up with ways to reduce overhead, which will in turn reduce the need for increased fees and taxes.

One way is to cross train our City staff to multi task in areas such as inspections.

Another is to out source the entire inspection process to qualified engineers, and independent contractors who work under their supervision.

The City also needs to study outsourcing the operation of our Water/Sewer operation to one of many companies that provide this service, and hire or retain two or three people to oversee them.

Whenever these types of options are presented to any one in government, the first thing you will hear them say is: “Well, they would expect to make a profit”, which is how all governments think.

Written on Judge rules Marco Island man in prison for mortgage fraud won’t have to pay restitution:

After all “We the People” went through to get this deadbeat, along with 31 other deadbeats indicted, the judge lets him keep his stash, and lets those who aid and abet continue to do what they know best, rob and steal from “We the People”

I guess what they say is true: Crime Pays.

Written on MICA: Which City Council Candidate should you vote for?:

I only have three questions for the City Council candidates:

Assuming I am a member of the Council, and I make a motion to disolve Cityhood:

1. Who would second my motion???

2. Who would vote for the motion???

3. Who would vote against the motion???
