It should help all of us get relief from the Washington Madness Sickness.

Written on Marco Island Marriott accepts 111-foot height limitation; defends 1,243 parking spaces:

in response to happy6:

ALL THE TRUCK TRAFFIC DOWN SAN MARCO...GREAT...the road is like a roller coaster now from the sewer laterals and the pavement settling...mr city manager...drive down the road then call the contractors and get them back to remedy the situation.

Our new manager clearly stated that San Marco Rd was built to State Standards just like Rte. 75, so lets consider raising the speed limit to 80 mph, as well as allowing all heavy truck traffic.

Who do "We the Tax Paying People" think we are by wanting a little peace and quiet on our previously Non - City Island. Let the Big Guys Rule.

Once Morgan and Morgan, the For the Pot People, get their way, no roads will be safe anymore, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy a pot laced Oreo cookie.

Written on Marco Island Marriott accepts 111-foot height limitation; defends 1,243 parking spaces:

"During construction, heavy truck traffic will be routed down San Marco Road. Tim Pinter, the city’s public works director, told the board San Marco Road (S.R. 92) was built to state standards as a truck route and was as durable as Collier Boulevard".

What the H does durability have to do with trucks coming in via San Marco Rd which is two lanes vs. four lanes.

Then our new City manager says:

"Marco Island City Manager Roger Hernstadt addresses concerns Friday that heavy construction truck traffic on Bald Eagle Drive will pass through two school zones. If necessary, Hernstadt said, no construction traffic will be allowed during certain hours".

What an out of touch comment this is. Heavy construction truck traffic will be a hazard on San Marco Rd., and SR29 no matter what time it is.

I heard it all today at the hearings with the GM Executives, Barbara Box-Head and Claire Mclasky telling GM there is a culture of corruption at the Corporation?
ALL I CAN SAY WHO BETTER TO MAKE THAT CLAIM THAN THE EXPERIECED.

It makes me wonder why we have three clowns spending a small fortune on TV Ads to take over the seat of the drug addict we elected the last time.

The only question I have for them, and anyone else running for public office today is: What do you expect to get out of it??, and not: What do you plan to do for We the People.

Written on Common ground: Planning Board begins quest to find more public parking:

The new privately owned parking lot on S. Collier is an accident waiting to happen.

People using the lot are supposed to cross Collier at the 3 way stop street, which is causing problems, but many are crossing the center isle instead, including young children crossing by themselves.

Also, I think anyone who lives on or near San Marco Rd should make signs, and protest in front of City Hall and block any decision to allow Marriott truck traffic on this road.

Written on Letter to the Editor: San Marco not the answer:

This Letter to the Editor needs to be moved to the front page and remain there until our "Elected Officials" reach a conclusion.

Let's also not forget the children in the Barfield School area and the danger this will bring to them.

Written on Marco Island Planning Board narrows objections to Marriott PUD amendment:

"The board hashed out a route that would reduce traffic problems. Trucks would enter the city over the Goodland Bridge, continue down San Marco Road and turn south onto Collier Boulevard."

"Tim Pinter, public works director, confirmed that San Marco Road was adequate to handle heavy loads."

"The route also diverts loaded trucks from crossing the Smokehouse Bridge, a questionable track over a structure in need of repair. It eliminates extra traffic and congestion if the bridge and the Marriott are under construction at the same time."

So I guess everyone on San Marco Rd becomes Chopped Liver and gets thrown under the Bus, including the Barfield kids crossing the street.

Make the replacement of the Smokehouse Bridge a part of the deal, or forgetaboutit.

Written on Letter to the Editor: It is time to stop the craziness:

The one and only question to ask anyone running for public office today is:

What to you expect to gain if elected.

I guess I'll vote for the Doctor, but I don't know why.

Written on Replace or repair? Wording for Mackle Park's community center referendum still uncertain:

in response to CopWatch:

There is a children's song many of us fondly remember and could sing aloud today without much prompting: "The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round...." It inspires hope and joy in many a young child even to this day.

Which brings us to the Marathon City Council and begs the question, "Is the Marathon City council a bus?" Because it seems like all it does is go round and round.

And isn't it a good idea now that Marathon is facing something of a cleanup?

Last week, we reported the city has forfeited a significant grant -- the second one in a month. One was a $1.53 million National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant meant to help purchase Boot Key for preservation.

Now the city is on the verge of returning $264,000 ($200,000 plus interest) to the state Department of Environmental Protection. That money was earmarked to help purchase a roughly two-acre parcel of land aimed at expanding the Marathon Community Park. But half that land now has a sewer plant, something the DEP money wasn't meant to foot.

Someone obviously was asleep at the wheel here. It's also clear the post-Roger Hernstadt cleanup may run deeper than first thought.

Last week, the city moved to have its lawyer refund $3,000 for unjustified salary paid to Hernstadt after he accepted his Marco Island position on Jan. 13. But Hernstadt continued to be paid by Marathon through Jan. 30, which in part led to attorney John Herin being ousted Tuesday night as the city's top legal advisor.

There's a pattern here -- Marathon has some real problems that its leaders need to face; these things don't happen in a vacuum. Let's remember that to effect real change, we must be willing to take risks and be brave. We certainly can't just be whistling Dixie, especially since the city can no longer claim it's new and is learning as it goes.

Very interesting.

And we paid a consultant how much to find this guy??

I'm thinking that all past and future managers should live in RV's.

Written on Replace or repair? Wording for Mackle Park's community center referendum still uncertain:

in response to harrisbill239#279036:

I agree that this issue should be decided at referendum. And I definitely want to see a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule and plan before moving ahead with anything on the Community Center. For some reason, this town NEVER wants to do any maintenance. They prefer to just wait until the bridges, roadways and buildings (yes, and even the city's vehicles) are falling apart from neglect, then they want to tear them down and build new. Is this the same way they address maintenance and repairs on their own homes? Wake up people! It's far less exepensive to do the required maintenance than to tear down and rebuild every few years.

You are 100 per cent correct. Letting an 18 year old building become a tear down due to a lack of maintenance is a crime.

As I have said before, if a $50M profit is not good enough for Mass Mutual, then sell it, move on, and don't let the door hit you in the rear end on the way out.

This is a tourist destination, period.

Written on Guest column: MICA chimes in on Marriott expansion:

As I said in a previous blog regarding Marco Island being named the best Island in the USA, and fourth in the World for tourists, please leave well enough alone.

If the Marriott is not a big enough “Feed Cow” for Mass Mutual, then sell it and move on.

If our Council approves te expansion, the hotel will be closed for an unknown period of time and many long time loyal employees will be laid off, and local businesses will suffer and also lay off staff.

So I repeat:

This is just my opinion, buy I think this article proves the Marriott needs to remain “as is” and continue to try to survive on a measly $50M per year profit.

I do not envy our current Councilmen’s job to approve the expansion, which I believe will have a negative effect on our attraction to the present travelers, tourists and small groups, when they begin to encounter large simi-trucks, and hundreds of short time expo visitors out for a good night on the town.

Marco Island is what it is, and the Councilmen need to consider this in their final decision.

Every time I travel on Rt. 75 I estimate at least 60% of other drivers are not paying attention to driving due to the many distractions, such as texting, etc.

Adding additional speed will only cause more accidents.

I also note that no one keeps the correct distance between themselves and the car in front of them, and if I do, I get cut off.
