Excellent story about the many successes at Lely High School.
Good job, Lely Track and Lely Baseball. Go Trojans!
What? Learning as we go?? Teaching fundamentals at the high school level? Good luck, you're going to need it!
Great pitching by Fowler, and a great team effort. Keep up the good work!
MarcoDefender - MIA wouldn't make something up??? HELLO! Where have you been???
Here's a perfect example why there should be no pit bulls on Marco! Several reside near the elementary school, and have been on the loose. It's only a matter of time until a student is attacked on the way to school.
Why is MICMS not on Tract K? Eagles. That's why MIA will not be on Tract K. Why do people have trouble understanding that? Mr Recker is not a fool, but the idea of using taxpayer money to go after Tract K seems foolish when you consider the history of the property.
Skull is wrong to state that true "islanders" want a new high school. Most of the proponents have not been on Marco very long at all. They know very little and/or nothing about Lely. It's the long time residents who know that Lely has done a great job of educating local students for nearly 4 decades!
Great letter!! So Recker wants to sue the school board? What a fool. Let's vote him out of office. We don't want or need Recker, just like we don't want or need a taxpayer-funded high school on Marco!
MICMS is not on Tract K. Why? The same reason the academy will not be on Tract K. THE EAGLES!!The academy is green?? The only green thing about them is they want your greenbacks.
Great letter!! Thank you for sharing your personal experience at Lely High School. As we all know, the people who are badmouthing Lely have no experience with Lely - they are ignorant about Lely High School. They should stop talking about Lely High School - the school that has been successfully educating Marco Island students for three and a half decades!
MIslander, students are getting a good education at Lely. You are misinformed.People who don't want their kids at Lely should just move. Lely has been there for 35 years, and it was there when most of you complainers moved here.
mymax101, thank you for your common sense comment on this serious issue. The MIA people are not dealing with facts. They are ignoring the fact that Lely is fulfilling the educational requirements of our Marco Island students.
FEAR & IGNORANCE = MIA supporters
They are trying to create fear by spreading falsehoods about Lely. They need to be stopped.
MIA people - STOP saying the school board is not allowing you to have Tract K. It was not available for MICMS, and for the SAME reason, it is not available for MIA. That is a fact.
I PITY the kids that will be forced to attend MIA, if it ever comes to be. Parents, don't be fooled by all the promises of a better education. It's not true.
Convince Marco Island for the need of a new school? That will NEVER happen. There is no NEED, only a want.
These academy people should move into the zone of a school they find acceptable for their little darlings. Better yet, START A PRIVATE SCHOOL.
Like thousands before us, we (the majority) are enjoying the successes of our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and neighbors at LELY HIGH SCHOOL! GO TROJANS!
Every $ put into a new school will be a $ not supporting Tommie Barfield,MICMS,or Lely, schools that have already fallen behind in support. Hey, why not add a new school to that list?
YOU TELL 'EM, FREEDOM! WHAT THEY WANT IS REALLY A PRIVATE SCHOOL.
marcosupporter - Your statement is far from the truth!!! Most of the Marco kids at Lely would not even consider attending Marco Limited Experience High School. Wake up and face reality. The CHOICE is LELY, or PRIVATE SCHOOL. Just like anywhere, a small group of Negative Neds is unhappy (like you), but you are not in the majority.
marcosupporter..your child's friends report similar stories?? Hello...you wrote that your child attends Lely. WHY WOULDN"T YOU ASK YOUR OWN KID?!?!?
Why? Because it's not true. Shame on you.
Taking aim at Lely High School is a foolish strategy for you academy supporters. Lely has been successfully serving our community for over 35 years, and continues to do so.
25 - Lampos is NO AUTHORITY on what goes on at Lely. Honors, AP, and dual enrollment (college credit) courses are offered. The claim that classes at Lely are easy is incorrect. Shame on her(as a teacher) to put that in writing!
97 - The main argument of the opponents to the new school is that it is not NEEDED. You would have everyone behind you if it was needed. But it's not, and you don't.
Right on crossingthebridge! A voice of knowledge and experience speaks. Now, if the others will only pull their heads out of the sand and listen.
Yes, the choice is simple - if you want an island high school - PAY FOR IT YOURSELF!
And please...your reference to an "A" education is disingenuous. Grading is based solely on the FCAT. You know the FCAT can be difficult for students who do not have English as a first language. You also know it has nothing to do with their intelligence.
Lely students are getting an "A" education.
Lely grads are currently enrolled in top schools across the country. They are the sons and daughters of people you know and respect.
Lely grads include judges, doctors, lawyers, teachers, principals, athletes, bankers, insurance executives, realtors, business owners, as well as many other professions and occupations. Somehow they manage to succeed...
What's ridiculous is your assumption that the children of Marco have no future without an island high school!!
Unfortunately, some people will give credence to this letter just because the writer is a teacher. Obviously, she has no firsthand knowledge of the high level honors, AP, and dual enrollment opportunities for Lely students. Obviously, she does not know that students from Lely went on to study at UF, UCF, USF, FSU, U of Miami, Emory, Columbia, Ole Miss, Harvard, Stetson, Embry Riddle, Cornell, and various military academies...I think you get it. Lely students have attended the most competitive colleges and universities in our country for many years. Imagine that, after taking all those "easy" classes at Lely! Yes, you should be embarrassed.
Remember, it's not about you and your inconvenience. It's about your freshman, and you being supportive parents! How do you think your freshman would feel if you took him/her out of the the activities they are enjoying, and away from their friends, and put them in a small, dud of a school on Marco? I can smell the resentment from here! Better get ready for the defiant behavior you'll be facing, instead of the joys of watching your child succeed in a true high school experience.
Let's get something straight - the opposition is not the small segment. Oh, and learn the difference between want and need.
Why even suggest having an academy at Lely? Not one person has provided proof that a new high school is NEEDED. And they can't, because it isn't!These people didn't want their kids going to Lely!! That's why they came up with the academy idea. Remember, Lely is too far for them to drive. It's okay for everyone else, but not them! LOLPrivate school, funded by parents. Shell out the dough, and leave the rest of us out of it!
Avia, MICMS and Lely students I talked with about attending a small island high school had no interest, and I mean NO interest. They even laughed about it. They are glad their parents don't feel the need to micromanage every move they make.
marco97 - TBE had around 730 students, and MICMS had over 400 students. The schools peaked at those numbers, and the numbers are declining.
marco97 - there were around 730 students at TBE a few years ago. MICMS had just over 400 in 2007. The total number of students has decreased by around 125. And that is just students from TBE and MICMS. That doesn't include the preschool and high school students who left the area.
We do agree on one thing - the student population on Marco Island is decreasing. The decline will continue. Several Marco families are making plans to leave the area.
So, with a declining student population on Marco, is it a good idea to build a new school? There's only one answer to that question. Let common sense prevail.
Marco97 - you are wrong. Marco schools are TBE and MICMS, not just TBE. My figures are correct. You stated you gave links to your figures. Really?
TBE lost about 75 students, MICMS lost about 50 students. To most people (not you I guess), 75 + 50 = 125. So I repeat:
MARCO SCHOOLS HAVE LOST ABOUT 125 STUDENTS IN THE PAST FEW YEARS.
TBE had enrollment of around 730 students two years ago, and MICMS was over 400 3 years ago.
Your figures are flawed, just like most of the "facts" that are spewed by academy supporters. And, I must say you are supporting only by spewing. Why not reach into your pockets and pay for your private school. Stop begging from the rest of us!
Something you may not know - Marco Island schools have LOST about 125 students in the past couple of years.
Another thing you may not know - many of the people behind this school idea are very wealthy. Not all, but a large % of them. They should really be working on starting a private school and stop wasting all this time. If they really have SO many people behind them, it should be no problem to get things going, right?
marcosupporter - MICMS has a "waiting list" every year.
And you totally ignore the FACT that Marco Island schools have lost around 125 students in the past couple of years. Families can't afford to live here.
Marco has a declining student population. No need for a new school.
The motto of Lely is, "Learning for all...whatever it takes."
marcosupporter - Info posted by me is never made up. I don't waste anyone's time, including mine, fabricating. I don't need to make things up. The facts above were gathered from the MICMS website this week. Perhaps YOU need to check the facts, smarty pants!!
So, the two Marco Island schools have lost around 125 students in the past few years. Wow, let's build another school! NOT!
Don't you academy people realize that families can't afford to live on Marco?
Enrollment at Tommie Barfield has gone way down. They have lost about 75 students in the past couple years.
Enrollment at Marco Charter Middle School is down around 350 students. A few years ago it had just over 400 students.
More families are leaving. We haven't seen the end yet.
Forget about the academy. BTW - don't want/need it at Lely either.
Will a tiny school on Marco have the following?Dual EnrollmentAP CoursesESE supportJROTCClubsTV ProductionTeachers and administrators who care about all the students (instead of a parent-micromanaged school)A huge library with 1000s of booksNational Honor SocietySpanish National Honor SocietyKey ClubStudent CouncilMarching BandCheerleadingCompetitive sports:SoftballBaseballLacrosseSoccerWrestlingBasketballVolleyballTrack and FieldFootballPlus -PromHomecomingPep RallysAnd many other things included in a well rounded high school experience. All the above is available at LELY HIGH SCHOOL, which will not cost residents of Marco Island any additional $$$ or inconvenience.
Who in their right mind would not want that for their child? You academy people better think about what your kids will be missing by attending a small school that offers very little except a closer-to-home location.
Any of you academy supporters think the students of a small high school on Marco will resent their parents some time down the road for denying them the opportunity to have a real high school experience?
Wonderful!!! Lely Band Rocks!!
These students are having the time of their life, at a REAL high school. Not a one would give this up to attend a small, limited experience school on Marco.
Parents - don't be fooled by all the promises by the academy people. They can not provide what is available at Lely. Do you really want your child to miss out on experiences like this?
What a fun day at the park. Thank you for holding this event. It was very well organized, and everyone had a great time!
4marco, glad to see you admit that you are wrong in calling the proposed academy a charter school.
Charter school - no. Private school - maybe. Only if you people cough up the bucks and give up on your mooching mentality. Stop expecting everyone else to pay for what you want. A high school on Marco is not needed, only wanted by a small group of people who live in fear of Lely. People are shaking their heads behind your backs at your ignorance. What a pitiful waste of time and effort.
4marco- get my facts straight??? You need to get your facts straight.
You state that the proposed academy is a charter school. When did the proposed Marco Academy get their charter? They don't have a charter. Why?
The county turned them down, backed up by refusal of the state to fund a charter high school on Marco. Why? Not needed. Some day, if this group gets private funding, they might have a little private school for a small number of students whose parents do not want them to have a well rounded high school experience. If that's what you want for your kids, keep your checkbook handy.
GWT-The school they are zoned for is Lely High School, a great place for kids to play sports. Please don't mislead by saying that academy students can play sports at Lely. That privilege is reserved for Lely students and home schooled students, not private school students. Start your own teams. And by the way, good luck. Your kids are going to need it.Oh, and that complaint that Lely is too far? Well, then wouldn't it be too far to play sports?
Great story. Thanks for letting us know about teenagers doing good things!
You have got to be kidding!!! They can't be serious. What hairbrained scheme will these people come up with next? Will someone with common sense please step in and stop this runaway train!!! Do you forget what a wonderful job LCEC did after the hurricane? They have responsibly supplied electricity to our island for years. LCEC has been on Marco longer than many of you relative newcomers. Stop trying to change/control everything. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
If these "discriminated against employees" keep it up, they may be able to retire on their "earnings" in a few years. Guess who's paying them? That's right - the rest of us.
CCPS, please think twice about settling these cases. What message are you sending? The message is "FREE MONEY". It doesn't sound like these charges would have held up in court. Many of us aren't buying their story.
Maybe you'll even have a few reverse discrimination lawsuits when English speaking, American citizens are unable to apply for CCPS jobs labeled "bi-lingual only" :(
Thank you, Gobers, for helping the Plancher family and friends. God bless.
Right on Fossil. Mr. Sullivan and his neighbors have reasonable expectations. The city needs to respect the peace and privacy that these residents have the right to enjoy.
Let's stop allowing student athletes to go to high schools for which they are not zoned. And why not rezone? It makes sense. Start at GCHS and work your way down to Lely. Of course the GCHS parents and students will scream it's unfair, but what has happened at Lely is not fair. Let's even it up.
As soon as I heard about the MN bridge collapse, I knew we'd all be seeing Minozzi's face on TV, and sure enough, the news stations were all down by the Marco Bridge. BTW- How can we get the name changed back to the real name, the Marco Bridge? PA-LEEEEEEEZE, only newcomers to Marco call it the Jolley Bridge. The rest of us know it's the Marco Bridge, and the other one is still called the Goodland Bridge. Let's keep it that way!
