Corruption probes hitting Dems across the country

A wave of corruption arrests and investigations is roiling Democratic politicians, posing a potential image problem in an election year.

The latest were a pair of arrests earlier this week, snagging Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon, who later resigned, and California state Sen. Leland Yee. The latter involved a tangled web of allegations including claims that the gun control-pushing lawmaker tried to connect an undercover agent with an international arms dealer.

So far, these cases are confined to the state and local levels, so it remains to be seen whether Democrats running in the congressional midterms will be tarnished.

In fact, the only major arrest of a U.S. congressman since the beginning of 2013 was that of a Republican, Florida Rep. Trey Radel, who was convicted for cocaine possession and resigned early this year. Each party typically is careful to throw stones when the other side finds itself on the wrong side of the law, because corruption and other misbehavior is a bipartisan problem.

For every Anthony Weiner, there's a Mark Foley.

But since Radel's October arrest, the bulk of the corruption cases have involved Democrats.

In California alone, Yee's case marked the third arrest or conviction in as many months of a state Democratic official.

Corruption and lies are in the Democrat DNA. I would love to be a fly on the wall now in Charlie Crist Campaign Stratagy Room.

I read the original story once again and based on what is being stated there I see more incompetnece than i did when the article fist appeared. The incident occurred in 2008 and an investigation was opened up in 2013, what? It sounds as if all of the sudden their conscience begain to trouble them so they initiated an 'Investigation" Now it's the report and and his lack of remorse along with some type of fase statements, what? After recognizing this whole darn thing occurred prior to his previous dismissal they will not charge him with excessive force, what? I think they said they did not have a complainant ( victim ) and if photos of the injury on the unknown complainant are to his cheek how is that consisitant with the officer punching him in the back of the head,What?
I voted for and suppoted Chief Hunter when he was the Collier County Sheriff but if this is his work or he supports this story that was prematurely offered to the Naples News then that former respect has diminished.
I can only go by what they provided us to read and believe that alone was sinister on their part.If this is anything close to what they have put together to terminate this officer in this instance they are and should be the laughing stock of Law Enforcement and really look small town.
This story has been discussed for the last five-six days and they have yet to announce a decision that I have seen. The staff of the Police Department look very foolish with this story and if this is their best work product the front door should be their next step.

He has documented everything and will bring this gross mismanagement to court and arbitration if necessary. There is another officer being abused that has been confined to this room for over a year. It's only your tax dollars that the police department will have to pay when they win in civil court.

Smith if what you say is accurate the result will be what you said even if they don't attempt termination he will have some extra spending money.
I have encountered this man about three times the first being when he was hired. My personal experience was on all three occasions was an impression that is far differant from any here.He was extremely polite and respectful young and impressionable and ripe for the right thing or if influenced perhaps less than that.I observed nothing during these meetings albeit brief that would make me think that he would be full of himself, over bearing and a potential or persistant disciplinary problem employee. You seem to know more but if that information rises to the level it has to this point how about some old fashion peer pressure?
One way or the other and anyone can check the archives on the history of this man I said when he won that apear that the Department was married to him and he had more job security than anyone in City Government.
I think they at this Police Department or it sounds like they are going to renew their vows with this officer.

Before everyone gets on the cost savings band wagon, you should research what Sheriff Rambosk said about costs. What you pay the SO now is what goes toward all of the other services from the SO, NOT for deputys to be present on the Island. For that you will pay more than you are now because it takes several thousand dollars more to hire and equip a deputy than it does a police officer. Don't forget each dep has a take home vehicle and all of the equipment inside it. That is not the case with the PD, they share equipment and vehicles. This argument has been going on since I have lived here right after the City became a City. Listening to these so-called tax watchers has done much to spread bad info. Even when Hunter was the Sheriff, he told council and those who bothered to attend the meeting the same thing. The sheriff's dept as patrol force is not free with what you are spending now. The same thing happens in Naples, they pay the Sheriff also. Get your facts together and maybe you will not be so quick to whine about what is going on. Here's a thought, try attending a few council meetings and getting educated on the truth rather than rumor....just a thought....Does anyone know how many officers our dept has??? find out, devide that into shifts and other services and see how many you have on the street at any one time....I'll help you, four, IF you are lucky. Lately, since so many have left the dept it has been fewer than that. THAT is not good coverage considering the number of people on this Island. Remember, there are a lot more people here than what live here. Your outsiders bring a lot of work for the PD...check it out...

Question is: What is the status of the officer in question?
Not being a wise guy but if they mishandle this or take the previous appeal for granted and do not have sufficient, fair and extremely justifible reasons for his dismisal along with the burden that this is not retaliation again this officer could have the word 'Chief' in front of his name sooner rather than latter, not kidding.

What this means is that you should refuse to allow yourself to become overwhelmed with trivia and detail. Stay focused and start off by trying the simplest possible solution. WOW! Fireworks going on. Why are you guys fighting each other when the real problem goes on? Did you know that the CM is allowing more hirings on the PD even in the wake of this ridiculousness? Why? Oh, by the way I hear that two of those four picked to be hired by Baer FLUNKED their polygraphs..nice selection, AGAIN! Perhaps the former chief, that some of you have decided to pick on, was in fact too s----- to see what Baer was doing or was he too trusting, I pick the latter. If you knew the whole story you could see what the real problem was and IS. Chief Carr did a lot of things for the City and was always interacting with city staff and the various organizations on the Island. Did he leave too much to Baer? that answer in my opinion is a solid YES. He should have looked more closely to what Baer was doing rather than trusting him the way he did. If you look into Carr's backgroud you would readily see a person who worked hard and he played hard. You would be hard pressed to match what he has accomplished over the years, listening to his resume at some of these meetings was eye opening. Was he perfect, no not at all but at least he tried to fullfill his commitments to our City, unlike the politician in that seat now. Oh, by the way the two officers that left under Carr were cut by the City for financial reasons. Check it out...

This was fundlementally my take as well all the things that may have occurred with those employee's I would know nothing about other than they may have a story to tell as well.I am quite sure this man has had the time to reflect and see his errors or perhaps he could care less? In any case if changes do not take place under the new Manager's review things will continue to happen that do not reflect very well on the Department and that would be sad.

August 8 seems to be very wise...having said that, it may be appalling to hear that I am very aware of the harsh nature and stigma that such a word carries. I would not recklessly throw a word like "corruption" around without knowing the definition. I would certainly call padding uniform crime reports in an effort to steer political support and selective enforcements that fall beneficial to one's political play to be a textbook definition of corruption. As far as the former chief breaking his back. ..well, I guess we can just disagree with each other. The only time he could've broken his bsck is by slipping behind a bar while being drunk! Tgat guy destroyed more lives than Enron...but I digress. ..I dont like to think about damage from the past by incompetence, we should deal with the mess at hand! And the facts are available and certainly undisputed, the fish rots from the head and this problem is a four headed monster!

Ok,Ok, I got ya and I can see by your passion that you have been a victim and I feel your anger. That's cool but I know you have to walk in a man shoes.
I won't correct you but just say if you scream fire people think fire? What you said is by definition a form of corruption as it misleads the tax payer by making them believe that we have more crime and are solving more crime, it is a game I am familiar with and it goes on in the big city as well as this city. I know what a farce statistics are and how they are used in all areas of government just look at what is occuring with our fine Democratic Adminstration is Washington now.
When you say corruption at this level many people automatically think'graft'or even more that is all I meant.
The words I have printed on this blog are in complete sympathy and understanding of the working people like yourself but this stuff goes on, can't put lipstick on that pig.The working guys and gals have a chance here to create some change so do it support each other and if the accussed officer is being rail- roaded jump in because enough is enough. You just want those that count to read this information and take something away from it.
The previous Chief was a good guy and I can tell you he would not say the same about me.he liked to play but he did work his fanny off.He was not perfect but outside of the influence and interferance I do think he wanted the best for the officer's so try not to tag him with everything.I think I know a solid core when I encounter one I do think his was there if I am wrong Iam bad?
I just see an outfit that needs fresh and energetic leadership and it's my hope that the innocent prevail and that the community and the city benifits.
This is all going to come down to the manager what he hears and reads and the believes and hopefully he has the charactor to help someone like you. Most of the time this type of junk takes care of itself but this is in the culture of your building and needs to change.
My best to you and all the good folks allways.
Hang in there !!!

Written on Marco officer fired, then reinstated, facing termination:

I would urge poster's to be cautious about the word corruption at least in this case.If they are speaking of inside/internal social or political behavior well then ok.But the big word corruption implies larger things that are criminal and very sinister. There is the danger of public impressions about the Department being incorrectly affected by that word.In order for the manager to take this information seriously as he should that word hopefully does not fit in these conversations, hopefully.
What was said above is interesting and perhaps accurate as the old saying is 'knowledge is power' and it also means entitlement and leaves others without the ability to make a contribution. My guess is this may be closer to the truth and what has been occuring here for a long time. The former Chief was a fine man that broke his back for the Department and trusted those close to him only to find out that was not the case.He should have remembered it sometimes is 'the dog you pet the most', I think that is what happened and see it as unfortunate.
They are just internally upside down in this place and a few major and bold changes along with an attitude of working with people and not over them this can and should turn around but it's a 24/7 deal as far as the eye can see.

Of course you have a right to comment and I never questioned that.
However, you are also throwing out many generalisations that you or no one else can back up. So why would I not question your alledged experience it just does not pass the smell test.
There was no intention to insult you or not understanding that you are a Miss but what does that have to do with this conversation anyway?
As far as NJ, those are the facts mam and I doubt to may people don't understand that just look at the record.
What is not correct is for a former lady investigator like yourself condemming this officer without fully understanding all of the real facts. We do not know in the absense of that information if he is being rightly or wrongly persecuted.I think I laid out at least some pertinent information and questions that at the very least should raise some eyebrows where the process and pattern the Police Department is following in arriving at a final determination in the officer's case.A good investigator like you mam should wait and see what that might be prior to sending out blind messgaes about bad apple cops. Now I think you might understand why I responed to you the way I did and if you should still feel offended then read your own posts.
This man is entitled to his due process and press releases by the Department like this one will make that hugely difficult and unfair no matter what the actual facts are. So?

They just better have it Mister if not they own it I can tell you that and they have the burden all the way as they married this man when he won his previous appeal.
Just the way it is.

How about this:
They have an investigation and are in the process of making a recommendation to dismiss yet another officer for improper acts and performance. So they post a press release outlining their conclusions and recommendations to the manager prior to knowing what his decision might be.For a moment just consider that the manager decides 'no' and tells them to go back to the drawing board and provide this man with additional remedial training in order to improve performance. The problem is now that the officer has been prejeduced publicly in the news paper so now what?I will tell you that the investigation is incomplete until the review process is complete which only adds to the officer's case in my view.Given the recent news accounts of prior dismisals ( 23 ) and many for discipline, they have a larger problem in this Department and need some major changes so that they may find a way to track business in a more organized an effective fashion. If you were a former IR Investigator then surely you know there are at least as many unethical and dishonest as well as over Zealous investigators as there are bad apple officers.
And, as an observer I have as much right as anyone to offer my opinions here and do not have to represent anyone.

Like I said they need to have their stuff together on this or the blow back will be nasty. This officer was hired very young as a favor to a former Police Chief that only meant he was in need of much training , support supervision and guidence which is not the history of the Department.Being untruthful in Law Enforcement is a serious matter but must be proven. If this charge is thrown out there and the evidence fails to establish that fact based on the prior loss in the dismissal they are in deep Doo-Doo and I am sure they understand that.
Clearly, the entire burden of this case from start to finish will be on the Department and the City so they ought to have their ducks lined up or run for cover.

Written on Crist defends President Obama, blasts Scott:

in response to CopWatch:

Charlie Crist doesn’t take to bed when he gets sick. He takes three Red Bulls, two cups of coffee, a glass of Mountain Dew, Sudafed and cough drops. Then, he discards the box of Mucinex his 81-year-old father suggested he take, pushes through the back door of a Fort Myers restaurant and wraps his arms around his Democratic supporters.

“I can’t help it; I have to hug,” he says afterward, when asked whether he worries about passing on his cold to voters. “Can you even imagine not hugging?”

Crist certainly couldn’t imagine it back on Feb. 10, 2009. Five years ago to the day, in this very town, the then-Republican governor introduced President Obama to a roaring crowd, threw his support behind the $787 billion economic stimulus bill and then — in classic Crist style — embraced the president in what Stephen Colbert dubbed a “terrorist nipple bump.”

“It was the kind of hug I’d exchanged with thousands and thousands of Floridians over the years,” Crist writes in a 341-page campaign document that doubles as his memoir. “But that simple gesture ended my career as a viable Republican politician.”

Months later, in the midst of a failed Senate primary campaign against Marco Rubio, Crist told CNN that he in fact never endorsed the stimulus measure and hammered Obama as a profligate spender. But that was many Crist memes ago. That was when he was trying to compete with tea party hero Rubio for conservative cred, before he left the Republican Party to become an independent and before he left the “Nowheresville” of being an independent to complete his transition to the Democratic Party.

You know ? I love smart people like yourself that have contol of history and the facts and can accurately call a spade a spade.
I say to you, all I want to hear is him expousing his support of Obama care over and over what a gift that will continue to give, right on !!

Written on Marco officer fired, then reinstated, facing termination:

in response to Tom_Massie:

Too many times failed investigations are the fault of those doing the investigations themselves. That does not in any way make the one being investigated neither innocent nor not innocent.

Myself, as a tax paying citizen on this island would like our police force clean from top to bottom. Is that too much to request?

The resignations over the past two years are a sign of significant problems that should be investigated, not internally, but from an outside investigatory group.

We need all of these issues cleaned up, if cleaning is needed, the sooner the better!

Tom Sr.

Good point !

How nice, a few of the above comments reveal considerations and thoughts many are not careful enough to make.Who does not stand for fairness I would think many do.
Can you imagine having your employment and future being recommended by your supervisors with the story and your photo plastered on the front page of a liberal sheet of newspaper, really? Tells me they are seeking some help in the removal of an employee they just don't want and at the same time exposing this to the very community he is expected to serve, just crazy folks.
This officer should go to Naples in order to seek the best legal council available and not sustain this type of treatment by anyone.

sorry, just cant stop venting...where is everyone...thought you would be all over this story....come on...cant wait to read ur opinions..think most will agree with me...

Ok, you want some commentary and perhaps another view I will provide that if you like:
Having zero access to the 'Investigative' File as all poster's here I have read articles in the past concerning this officer and the outcome and accuracy of those investigations which have been recognized I think as not persuasive to the final reviewing authotity or hearing examiner..If there is a legitamate complaint with a complainant ( victim ) and verifiable and and indesputable independant wittnesses with no agenda and the 'Evidence' can establish with a strong 'preponderance' of indisputable accuracy and proof that this officer commited the acts that are outlined in this 'news article' well I would be in full support of a dismissal.
Now, having been somewhat familier with the results of the last failed investigation and the officer's returning to duty as required by the legal authority and the huge potential for the bulls eye on his back every since makes me extremely dubious of this investigation and the true motive. The way this story reads this request for termination seems to be based on a judgement call on the part of the staff of the Police Department rather than on actual evidence that can stand the scrutiny of a formal review.Let's just say this if my take is close to being correct and their investigation can be shown as prejiditial this officer can stand to collect the largest paycheck of his life after being dismissed prematurly in the past so we must trust their best legal eye's, not cops, have reviewd their investigation and findings.
Always a strong supporter of the Marco Island Police Department and only want success for all that contribute in that regard. So, prior to anyone reacting and releasing a story like this to a media that loves escouriating cops in general perhaps much more should be considered here in order to avoid a potentially repetitive emabarrising mistake by management. I believe this officer was originally recruited and employed as a personal favor to a prior Police Chief and I would add that the current staff should be completely ready to establish in writing all administrative efforts to review, train and correct any and all performance observations with this officer in detail and their efforts and results in bringing about the desired result pror to another performance deficiency or he will and should eat their lunch.
To those who may be willing to make judgements on this man based on this news story I would say place yourself in his position and consider if you would want to be judged like this.I am not saying that this is a witch hunt but this is an alternative and I think fair point of view based on recent information on dismissals and resignations from this Department.
There it is.

agree with you..still don't understand politics on Marco...let the residence elect a mayor and city council..even though it will probably be republican..at least the residence should have a say..not just at meetings, where it seems everyone just screams and fights..I am not a full time resident but I pay taxes so I would still like to have a vote in my Island..where lets face it we pay heavy taxes..I own a condo and pay close to what I pay in taxes for a 2600 sq. ft townhouse in NJ where the taxes are one of the highest in the country..

I think you get it and don't blame you at all about your high taxes many people have had enough.Marco island is expensive and will only get higher but as time moves along the investment will have very sound gains. That's one reason I always advocate for the local police they keep an orderly and lawful community but also if managed properly add to the investment we are talking about.
Really, enough of all these neigborhood pretend and phony lawyers that do just argue and change things for the sake of change we are beating ourselves up with these fuss bugets.A mayor ( strong ) who is accountable to the folks with a manager that reports to him along with let's say four commisioner's should bring about a little sanity and peace.
I do not understand your comment on the Republican at all being from the highest tax state on the globe that is run by corrupt Democrats primarily or perhaps I misunderstood your remark?

I have dealt with Joe Irvin and he is very professional. I don't think he has a dishonest bone in his body, he reminds me of a Mormon I used to know. He is most likely leaving for reasons similar to why Dana Sousa left.

Hey, let's see what the manager's interviews produce with these former employee's, then we will know if he is a serious guy?
